Vim 8.0 has been released. This is the first major Vim release in 10 years.

New features include:

  • Asynchronous I/O support, channels, JSON
  • Jobs
  • Timers
  • Partials, Lambdas and Closures
  • Packages
  • New style testing
  • Viminfo merged by timestamp
  • GTK+ 3 support
  • MS-Windows DirectX support

Even if Neovim never becomes status quo in the vi world, has the competition at least given Vim developers a shot in the arm?

    Too many hardcore neckbeards here!

    No. Such. Thing.

I'll let you know that my neck is often lightly bearded and I use linux and do sysadminy stuff. Still, it is disappointing to see more comments on this story then quite a few others that merit discussion. Guess it boils down to who has enough knowledge to even make a comment, and there is probably a very large portion of users here that do IT.

Could this be Original AC's "basket of deplorables" moment?

"Boils" is the key word. Some of us are prone to getting them when we shave our necks, and sometimes health takes priority over fashion.

If you know people with different backgrounds, perhaps you can induce them to come here. Other forums, with different participants, also exist. Perhaps you'd find those more to your liking. As a sysadmin, you could, I assume, throw one up yourself.

I just wish people would feel more comfortable branching out more. I have a somewhat diverse background and would like to hear what other people think about a topic, but I realize not everyone has a comment for everything. But the few responses to some interesting scientific stuff sucks, and seeing a decent response to the new Vim just throws stark contrast on it. Sorry to bring complaints into what is easy fun on a software update story.

Well to respond, since you marginalize everyone here....

            1) Linux IS great. Really hard to say otherwise when the vast majority of the Internet runs on it. So are the BSD flavors too, and the SystemD conversation is anything but one-sided around here. There are proponents and opponents.

            2) Microsoft really does suck. With Windows 7 I would support MS a bit, and Server 2003 wasn't all that bad. Other than actually paying for licenses, MS wasn't all that terrible..... until Win 8.1. Then it became apparent that they got their heads stuck up their asses, and then we simply understood it as a full retard push to emulate Apple & Amazon. Windows 10 was reminding us they could always become stupider. Especially with the forced updates, telemetry, SecureItForMicrosoft Boot. Not sure what your point is here. Even MS fanboys have a hard time defending MS right now, since MS is even making their lives hell. If I was still supporting systems with Patch Tuesday missing (which I needed individual patches to not break our platform) I would just quit and become an exotic dancer instead.

            3) Elon Musk is kinda great. Yeah, I want to boil him in hot oil for creating PayPal, a criminal banking organization. That being said, it's kinda hard to not appreciate the guy as a titan in the tech world. Not sure what the gripe is, and I've not even seen a fanboy around here crushing on him yet.

            4) Comcast sucks! BWAHAHAAAHAHA. Well, Okay then. I guess it's just all of America saying they're the worst corporation year after year. Perhaps you should bring forth the miracle; An argument for Comcast as a positive force in our economy and society.

            5) Torrents are great! I can tell you mean this in the context of "Piracy is great!", which is really a barb against opponents of the current intellectual property regimes. Torrents as a technology are pretty cool. What is arguable is the effect our on our society via intellectual property wars that have resulted from its use. Around here there isn't the banal and defensive moronic statements defending piracy, but insightful analysis of how intellectual property has failed us in supporting our economies, encouraging the development of new intellectual property, and balancing it all with our other rights, especially privacy. You will find arguments here ranging from the complete abolishment of IP to moderate reforms of IP law, and I've found other people's thoughts on the matter to be insightful and worthwhile.

            7) The DMCA Sucks! Well, it actually does. Objectively, and subjectively, the DMCA is a horrid failure completely lacking all balance between corporations, citizens, privacy, anonymity, property rights, and the 1st sale Doctrine. Corruption clearly drips from its pages, and there are no checks and balances against improper reporting which are truly epic in scope and chilling effect. The DMCA is broken and only serves monied interests, which isn't serving the original purpose of IP protections in the first place; Incentivizing additional creation of IP while supporting a prosperous economy for all.

You claim we are moronic and only posing as geeks. If so, then put up or shut up. For #1-7 listed above give 4 full paragraphs each outlining why we are so clearly wrong, and why these things you mention are the way you imply they are. I say a lot of shit around here, but I try to back it up :)

            Your turn fucker :P

            1) Linux SUCKS. Why?
            2) Microsoft ROCKS. Why?
            3) Elon Musk is a smelly troll. Why?
            4) Comcast is a wonderful corporation that delivers excellent service to customers and treats employees well. Why? (vaya con dios amigo)
            5) Torrents are TERRIBLE. Why?
            6) The DMCA is a worthy addition to IP that operates properly. Why?
