They found that, when responding to a virus, the mice needed glucose to protect their brain cells from being damaged by inflammation. Without glucose, one specific anti-viral response killed cells in their brains. But when mice were in bacterial defence mode, they benefitted from a lack of sugar.

Does that mean the Atkins followers have a higher risk of brain damage from flu? Or there's still enough glucose around?

Yup like it said. It is all sugar. Break proteins done to sugar. Break down fats, stored tripled sugars. Why fats are 9 cal/gram. Where sugar and proteins are 3.

Have to do that math all the time to get insulin right. And no you not get free sugars. That is the lie on nut rial packaging. A carb is a carb is a carb. Unless your gut is bacteria and virus free... It is in your blood stream.

Table sugar and alcohol can and do cross to your blood stream even in your mouth.

Amino acids are not sugar and fats are also not sugar. They also do not break down into sugar.

Try taking a look at their chemical structures. I'd link to Wikipedia, but you probably wouldn't take the time to read.

Glucogenic does not mean it is a sugar but merely thay a sugar can be generated from it in a catabolic state. This is why carb counting is recommended over calorie counting. If dosing insulin, you will enter an anabolic rather than catabolic state. Dosing a basal insulin should keep you out of ketosis.
