From The Washington Post:

The survey's findings support other research showing that as overall rates of gun ownership has declined, the number of firearms in circulation has skyrocketed. The implication is that there are more guns in fewer hands than ever before. The top 3 percent of American adults own, on average, 17 guns apiece, according to the survey's estimates.

Washington Post

Interesting. Lawyers, guns, and money! Which of these has the smallest percentage and largest absolute amount? Of course, the other major shift the survey reveals is in the rationale for owning firearms: currently, a majority of owners cite personal protection as their motivation, prior to the 1990's the majority owned guns for sport.

sell them to me, of course :)

I guess the easiest way is to sell to someone in a different state (using something like gunbroker or a similar website), that way both you and the buyer are required to do the transfer through an FFL dealer and all the paperwork & background checks are done. Depending on your state, face-to-face sales can be a completely private deal - in my former state of residence (NY), I have literally done a private party sale in the parking lot of a Babies-R-Us. That kind of thing would probably not be looked too kindly on in this current post-NY SAFE act era.
Something you might want to check on is if your local law enforcement provides any type of service for this, I've heard of some cities where their police dept. would let people do craigslist sales/trades in their parking lot so they wouldn't have to worry about getting robbed or whatever.
I still would be interested to hear what you're trying to get rid of...

Because a couple of people pulling into the parking lot at the police station, popping the trunk and pulling out a Bushmaster will go about exactly the way you think it will go.

valid point, i think it would be a good idea to contact the police dept. ahead of time - pretty sure Runaway1956 summed it up the best to go with a local FFL if you want to have a paper trail to CYA...
