Yahoo secretly scanned millions of its users' email accounts on behalf of the US government, according to a report. Reuters news agency says the firm built special software last year to comply with a classified request.
"Yahoo is a law abiding company, and complies with the laws of the United States," the tech firm said in a statement provided to the BBC.
The allegation comes less than a fortnight after Yahoo said hackers had stolen data about many of its users. Yahoo is in the process of being taken over by Verizon Communications in a $4.8bn (£3.8bn) deal. The telecoms provider declined to comment on the report.

She decided the work at home folks had to come into the office. She bought a lot of questionable companies owned by people she used to work with, only to write down 90% of their value. She made yahoo/news pretty much useless. She did her best to make yahoo/finance useless, only to be foiled by stupider idiots than herself. She bought Tumblr, censored it, then watched it's value vanish. She knew most of her customers had been hacked, yet blocked anyone in her company from letting users know they were fuxord. She refused to give her IT dept the money to fix said hack. She hid the fact she'd been hacked for 2 years, then it turns out more than twice the number of her customers got haxord. And now we find out she gave her blessings to let some TLA scan every fucking one of her email users email looking for anything that could make the email user look bad should the TLA need to provide evidence.
What exactly does it take for an incompetent Cxx to get hauled in for criminal charges. Oops, my bad. She contributes to both major parties, she's good.
