Antonio Guterres will become the next United Nations Secretary-General after winning a straw poll unanimously:

Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is set to become the next United Nations secretary-general, after the 15 Security Council members agreed to put his name forward to a formal vote. Guterres, who was head of the UN's refugee agency for 10 years until 2015, emerged as the Security Council's runaway favorite after the latest in a series of straw polls on Wednesday. Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the UN and current Security Council president, told reporters that Guterres would face a vote in the Security Council on Thursday. "Today, after our sixth straw poll we have a clear favorite, and his name is Antonio Guterres," he said.

The BBC has some background information about Guterres.

If they do two terms, they are and have been ineffective. If they were effective, at least one permanent member of the security council would have vetoed them.
It's only if they do one term and then get blocked, that you know you've had one that was at least somewhat effective.

If you're really effective you might even be murdered. [wikipedia.org]

Also, our own Helen Clarke put her name forward for this job, and her former enemies that now form our Government put their best foot forward on her behalf, as it "would be good for New Zealand" although no-one ever explained how.

I'm pretty sure it would have been good for Helen Clarke, but she lost badly.
