Ars Technica reports, following online reports of customers becoming ill after eating Soylent's new snack bars, the company announced this afternoon [October 13] that it has decided to halt all sales and shipments of the bars as a precautionary measure. The company is urging customers to discard remaining bars and will begin e-mailing customers individually regarding refunds. In a blog announcing the decision, the company said it is still investigating the cause of bouts of illnesses of customers linked to the bars, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

People get super paranoid about food. Soylent's had problems before with mold growth in their bottled drink. It was only a tiny fraction of the units shipped, but any mold is too much mold. They changed their packaging to better seal the bottles and the mold problem went away. But you'd think they would have learned that if you are doing food, nobody gives you slack. Ok, that's not true the FDA gives "traditional" food manufacturers all kinds of slack [wikipedia.org] bugs, shit, hair, etc. But if you are going to do "food 2.0" you have to be way better than the grandfathered food industry standards. Reports are that Soylent outsources manufacturing to a variety of plants around the USA and so there is variation not directly under their control. Which is the same problem we have with stuff manufactured in China, if you outsource manufacturing you gotta compensate with much more stringent quality enforcement.

...any mold is too much mold.

Hey, I like Brie and Camembert which are partly created by mold.

Everyone's so serious in this thread? Come on, Soylent Green was made from people and cannibalism is not the way to go (example: mad cow disease passed around from feeding cows to cows). There ought to be a joke in there somewhere...

The problem with this batch of Soylent was the people used to create it. They were expired.
