1st Gear: The Apple Car Is No More

Building cars is hard. Tesla knows that. Google learned it the hard way too. And the latest tech giant to discover limits to its car-building ambitions is Apple, which according to Bloomberg , has given up on making its own car.

Granted, I've always thought that Apple's ultimate aim was to develop software or technology it could use to partner with existing automakers, rather than its own vehicle, but now that definitely seems to be the case. Now Apple is focused on creating autonomous systems for other companies.

When they told them the reason for the fatal accident was that they were "holding it wrong".

That's the real reason Apple can never make a car by itself. Death is not something fanboys will be able to brush off.

You haven't talked to any. Or to the right ones. They will find a way. The reality distortion field is powerful.

Apple went from being way far ahead of the rest of the entire computer industry, but unwilling to license its technology, to a company whose entire future is now tied to iPhones -- and that won't last forever.

        and the 2006 version:

I wouldn't count them out just yet, and yes even without "Jobs"

Good point. And remember, any of these big companies can quickly gain a leg up in any sub-industry by opening their checkbooks and overpaying for startups with a hit product.

Whether or not the iPhone lasts forever, I just want the Librem phone [puri.sm] to exist.

Can you imagine a blob/binary free smartphone with hardware kill switches running GNU/Linux? Fully open to hack, develop, and customize?

Freedom over here on one hand............ and Walled Garden w/ corporate surveillance on the other hand.

        Tough choice :)
