1st Gear: The Apple Car Is No More

Building cars is hard. Tesla knows that. Google learned it the hard way too. And the latest tech giant to discover limits to its car-building ambitions is Apple, which according to Bloomberg , has given up on making its own car.

Granted, I've always thought that Apple's ultimate aim was to develop software or technology it could use to partner with existing automakers, rather than its own vehicle, but now that definitely seems to be the case. Now Apple is focused on creating autonomous systems for other companies.

exploiting workers making iDevices seems tomwork (until they get the robots to work better)
Exploiting workers building cars.. doesn't work as well.
You get things like Chery and SAIC - nasty, likely dangerous, not-as-reliable as the competition, but so cheap they are almost disposable (yes, I know this is what Datsun and Toyota and then Hyundai have done, but they had to get better to keep selling)

Apple can't afford to suddenly build complete crap (queue many saying they already do..note I said "complete" crap- iDevices *do* work (for a while, at least))
For every Tesla we have several companies like Fisker - and Apple would likely be similar, only with bigger cash reserves (to start with)

Apple saw the excitement around "next generation" cars, wanted some of that action, then spent two years finding out they aren't a car company.
