1st Gear: The Apple Car Is No More

Building cars is hard. Tesla knows that. Google learned it the hard way too. And the latest tech giant to discover limits to its car-building ambitions is Apple, which according to Bloomberg , has given up on making its own car.

Granted, I've always thought that Apple's ultimate aim was to develop software or technology it could use to partner with existing automakers, rather than its own vehicle, but now that definitely seems to be the case. Now Apple is focused on creating autonomous systems for other companies.

    They probably figured out that people expect cars to take them to strip clubs and erotica shops and didn't want their cars to be seen near such places.

    LOL it would be the ultimate hipster mobile. Come from the factory with the "coexist" sticker premounted. "Voted least likely to be driven to a Trump rally" Comes from the factory with joint roller and joint lighter instead of cigarette plug. Some car GPS downloads live high traffic areas to route around, this car GPS downloads live BLM protest locations as preferred destinations. Trunk has a special recess to make it easier to carry anti-capitalist protest signs and megaphones.

    One semi-serious additional comment off the topic is Apple loves finding a standard, and making a new incompatible microscopically better (sometimes not) and making sure the new standard costs a hell of a lot. So knowing those bastards they'll go positive grounded chassis at 6 volts just to F with existing automotive accessories, instead of the ISO standard charging cable they'll invent some bastardized thing thats incompatible and costs x10 as much. Sure all of the worlds cupholders are round but we're going to save the earth by installing only trapezoidal cup holders and licensing trapezoidal cups to starbux and other fast food ... I don't think the automotive marketplace will tolerate that kind of crap. phone and music buyers, sure, but not car buyers.

      I was joking, but considering Apple's ridiculous ban on apps that could be used to read erotica, I'm not sure it's really that far from the truth.

      It's a shame that Apple is one of the few sources for computers that aren't either DIY or Windows pre-installed.
