The Mirror reports

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, which runs hospitals in Goole, Grimsby, and Scunthorpe, [...] provides services to more than 350,000 people.

[...] Dr Karen Dunderdale, the trust's deputy chief executive, told the Grimsby Telegraph [October 31]: "A virus infected our electronic systems yesterday and we have taken the decision, following expert advice, to shut down the majority of our systems so we can isolate and destroy it.

[...] "All adult patients (over 18) should presume their appointment or procedure has been cancelled unless they are contacted."

[...] "Major trauma cases will be diverted to neighbouring hospitals as will high risk women in labour.

"While our emergency departments remain open and are accepting ambulances, we would urge people to only visit if they absolutely need to, [i.e.] it is an accident or emergency.

The Lincolnite adds:

Mark Brassington, Chief Operating Officer at [United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (ULHT)], said: "Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) has had to [shut down] all their electronic systems due to a computer virus.

"ULHT shares four clinical IT systems with NLAG, so, as a precautionary measure to protect ULHT, links with these shared systems have been stopped.

"We have a plan in place to minimise risks to patients which includes reverting to manual systems.

"The biggest impact on the trust is in processing of blood tests, access to historical test results and availability of blood for blood transfusions.

"Our number one priority is keeping patients safe so we are [canceling] all planned operations tomorrow (Tuesday 1 November) unless there is a clinical reason not to.

"We are trying to contact all patients, but patients due to have an operation on Tuesday are being asked to not turn up unless they hear otherwise.

Any bets on whether the version of the operating system they run is even supported?

Here is the link you wanted used:

    https://soylentnews.org/article.pl?sid=15/05/27/1247219&mode=nested&threshold=0#articles

Logged-in users get to choose their default layout mode and threshold. If they followed the submitted link, their preferences would be ignored in deference to the explicitly specified ones given in the link. As we have nearly 6400 registered users on the site, I will continue to change links like the foregoing so as to respect the user's preferences, like so:

    https://soylentnews.org/article.pl?sid=15/05/27/1247219

For example, I read with "threshold=-1" which shows me ALL comments that are posted so that I can see any unfairly down-modded comments. If I were to follow the provided link, I would not see those.

Also, if you wish to communicate with the staff, I would suggest you would find it far more productive and timely to engage in a conversation using IRC Internet Relay Chat). One doesn't even need to install an IRC client, just click the link provided in the "SoylentNews" slashbox on the left-hand side of the main page: IRC [soylentnews.org].

Yeah, I also read at -1.
I also drag URLs into a blank Address Bar and modify them there if I don't like the current state.

By forming a link that has maximum content (without trolls), I'm hoping that more people will find the site via search engines--and like it.

    Your agenda is clearly different.

As an alternative to scrambled eggs in the URL, the default presentation of the site's pages might be configured to suck less (so, when spidered by search engines, those don't see and record a skeleton).

The other site does this correctly IMO.

I guess I'll just have to hope that you don't find my submissions interesting.

martyb doesn't have an agenda - he is not trying to force his views upon others. He has, however, a perfectly valid reason for doing what he has done, and he has explained it to you. The site tries to keep control over what users see in the hands of the people that matter most i,e, the members of our community. If you feel that your preferences should be the normal editorial policy then please join us on IRC to discuss the matter with the editorial team and we can re-evaluate the issue. Search engines seem to manage quite nicely at present although, to be honest, I don't personally care whether they like the format of our site or not. Our own 'Search' facility which is available on the LHS seems to do the job that I need to to do.

The presentation of the the site's pages is up to the user to decide. Those that have to accept the default because they do not wish to log in - sometimes despite also having a user ID which would allow them to control how they view pages :) - can also raise their opinions and views on IRC.

I guess I'll just have to hope that you don't find my submissions interesting.

Hard Luck! Sometimes we do which is why we publish them, but we are still responsible for editing them to meet the requirements of our site

Personally, I believe that we will best increase the numbers of people both viewing and joining this site by offering the best possible product within our limited resources. I do not want to grow the site's membership if it simply means attracting more trolls or people who just want to disrupt the the discussions taking place, I accept that getting ourselves known is important but I don't think that Google is necessarily the best vehicle for that.

That is going to be difficult with a skeletal representation in the search engines.

What if the software detected the spider and presented it in nested mode w/threshold by default? There must be a way to accomplish both goals (search engines seeing more comments and respecting user preferences) if that's what we choose to do.

I've actually started looking into that. =)

Long story short, it should be reasonably easy to change one of the existing links (or add a new one) which is intended to be used by search engine spiders to access ALL the comments on a story. It could be provided on the main page ( https://soylentnews.org/ [soylentnews.org] ) following each story where there is currently a "Read More..." button and then a link to N comments. At the moment, each of these links are identical (so far as I can tell). Either one of these could be changed (or a new control added) to a link which has both threshold and breakthrough set to -1.

I want to talk this idea over with the other devs to see what drawbacks this might have before even attempting to implement it.

NOTE: a link with a threshold/breakthrough of 0 (zero) sounds good, but would omit a comment from being spidered even though it might get modded up only seconds later. Conversely, a comment could be scored at 0 (and, therefore, got spidered) might be downmodded to -1 only moments later. It seems to me that if we are going to open up access for better spidering, we need to do so with the most inclusive options we can.
