Los Angeles police have charged Playboy model Dani Mathers over a "body-shaming" image she took of an older woman in a gym locker room. The picture of the naked 70-year-old was taken in LA Fitness in July without her consent and posted on social media. She uploaded the photo to Snapchat alongside one of herself and the caption: "If I can't unsee this then you can't either". Ms Mathers faces a charge of invasion of privacy. She could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 (£800) fine if convicted.

Ms Mathers, 29, apologised soon after uploading the image, saying she thought her Snapchat post had been a private conversation and acknowledging that "body-shaming" is wrong. However, her lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, is quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying his client did nothing illegal, neither invading anyone's privacy nor violating any laws. Announcing the decision to charge the model, Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer took aim at "body-shaming", calling it "humiliating, with often painful, long-term consequences".

Well I think Ms Mathers should be subject to the same thing, having naked pictures of her posted in... oh... damn.

Actually, while this is funny, I do think there's something else to think about. It's a very different thing to be photographed nude (or semi-nude) in a staged professional context where the photographer is deliberately trying to make you look as attractive as possible, and you likely have some control over what gets published too.

I mean, look at sex scenes in popular movies or something, or even the more "racy" spreads of female celebs in some fashion magazines. Not only do the celebs generally have lots of makeup and perhaps a choice of a flattering wardrobe, but they're often photographed from particular angles (or avoid being photographed in particular ways) to accentuate everything in the most perfect way possible. I don't know much about this, but I remember hearing an interview a few years back from a female celeb talking about all the detail that goes into their nudity clauses, often specifying precisely what can be shot, how much, and in what way. So a celeb with flaws (like just about any normal person) can still appear "perfect" on screen or whatever.

It's pretty rare in movies to see the kind of "raw" nude photo you might have of a random person at the gym. And if you did, you'd probably be shocked at how "ordinary" many of the "perfect bodies" you imagine really are.

Of course, here we're talking about a Playboy model, so that's a little different. Still, take the makeup off and put her in awkward poses with some unflattering camera angles, and maybe she'll look significantly worse too. I've never seen her "assets" (and I don't care to), so I don't really know.
