In a full-page ad taken out in major US newspapers on Monday, tech manufacturer Samsung has offered an apology for the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, which was fitted with a faulty battery, leading to an unprecedented number of the devices exploding. In September of this year, Samsung issued a full recall; now it's promising to fully investigate the phone, Korea Herald reports.

"An important tenet of our mission is to offer best-in-class safety and quality. Recently, we fell short on this promise. For this we are truly sorry," the ad reads."A careful Note 7 investigation is underway and the findings will be shared when the process is complete...We will re-examine every aspect of the device, including all hardware, software, manufacturing and the overall battery structure. We will move as quickly as possible, but will take the time needed to get the right answers."

Is it too late? The devices have been exploding for months.

One of Samsung's most popular phones explodes and it's not the Galaxy Note 7 [phonearena.com]

A Galaxy J5 exploded in the hands of Lamya Bouyirdane from France on Sunday. The woman noticed that her phone got unusually hot and quickly asked her four-year-old son to give it back to her during a family gathering at her home. She then threw the phone away when she saw it that it had swollen up and smoke was coming out of the device.
[...] next, [...] the phone caught fire and exploded with the back cover flying off.

How could things get worse for Samsung? Glad you asked [theregister.co.uk]

Police in South Korea have raided the corporate offices of Samsung in connection with a high-profile government corruption probe.

The Korea Times reports that police conducted the search on Tuesday at Samsung's headquarters on the suspicion that executives at the company were involved with illegal payments to foundations run by a person close to Korean president Park Geun-hye.

The story goes on to report that prosecutors believe Samsung execs were asked by Park to provide "billions of Won" in donations to two foundations controlled by Park advisor Choi Soon-sil and his daughter in exchange for influence with the government.

I've seen articles describing this person as a "fortune teller" and a "cult leader".
It reminds me of Nancy Reagan's superstitious nonsense.
...but at least Ronnie's personal witch wasn't the president of a country.

South Korea's presidency "on the brink of collapse" as scandal grows [washingtonpost.com]

South Korea's president is engulfed in a political scandal with plotlines straight out of a soap opera: rumors of secret advisers, nepotism and ill-gotten gains, plus a whiff of sex. There's even a Korean Rasputin and talk of a mysterious clique called the "eight fairies".

...plus the exploding washing machines we have discussed.

...and Samsung's toxic work environment we have discussed.
