from the not-a-different-president dept.

I've come across an article on The Atlantic that analyses Trump's personality:

Many questions have arisen about Trump during this campaign season—about his platform, his knowledge of issues, his inflammatory language, his level of comfort with political violence. This article touches on some of that. But its central aim is to create a psychological portrait of the man. Who is he, really? How does his mind work? How might he go about making decisions in office, were he to become president? And what does all that suggest about the sort of president he'd be?

It's a long, but very interesting read.

Here's a list of sentences the article itself highlights:

Combined with a gift for humor, anger lies at the heart of Trump's charisma.

Trump appeals to an ancient fear of contagion, which analogizes out-groups to parasites and poisons.

Narcissism in presidents is a double-edged sword. It is associated with historians' ratings of "greatness"—but also with impeachment resolutions.

Andrew Jackson displayed many of the same psychological qualities that we see in Trump.

Trump has never forgotten the lesson from his father: The world is a dangerous place. You have to be ready to fight.

And the final paragraph summarizes:

Who, really, is Donald Trump? What's behind the actor's mask? I can discern little more than narcissistic motivations and a complementary personal narrative about winning at any cost. It is as if Trump has invested so much of himself in developing and refining his socially dominant role that he has nothing left over to create a meaningful story for his life, or for the nation. It is always Donald Trump playing Donald Trump, fighting to win, but never knowing why.

Dissent was always patriotic, it was the unpatriotic and unAmerican among us that chose to throw *that* vile slander around. It's been a political game to label some dissent as acceptable dissent, and others as treasonous, when even to the simplest American it was clearly a disagreement.

What's finally happened is one half of America is now completely disconnected from the other. It's never been more clear that there is nothing in common between us, and that civil war is inevitable. You celebrate nothing. It's an empty Pyrrhic victory with you enjoying tears upon the ashes of America.

Tears? If we're lucky all it will be is some emotional outpouring of grief while you prepare to ransack the country. You forget that Trump lost the popular vote by quite a lot, and still counting. Not everyone who voted for Trump is a racist bigot all too easily susceptible to the usual ethnocentric ploys, but just suffering from fear like everyone else. When your afraid for the future, and actually hate the other candidate, that's how a piece of shit like Trump gets elected in the first place.

You truly have nothing to celebrate. You didn't get the best of your party, but one rent asunder and now driven by fear, anger, hatred, and vengeance against the other half of America, while in a hamfisted and ignorant fashion lashing out at other cultures and cultural diversity as the source of your problems. It's not Islam that is your true enemy. For that matter, it's the elites and corporations, but you can't see it that way. It's the liberuls, always the liberuls that are the problem. If you could read history and understand it, you would see that all requests from the working class have been always been framed in vile ways, especially the vileness of "leftists", Communists, Marxists, Anarchists, etc. "You can't have the 8 hour day because idle hands are the devil's playthings. The working class is better off working all day anyways". That wasn't hyperbole I paraphrased, but the actual positions of the elites during that time.

I've never accepted that label, but I know one thing. There are two sides in America, and they're deepening in their divides by the hour. Look at yourself, not thinking of how to come together, not thinking of how to make progress, but to relish in the emotional anguish of others. That just says everything about you and your side. The "side" I apparently fight for is the side of civil rights, freedom, AND the prosperity of the working class. Something your side does not, and has never, represented. To be fair, those at the top of our side never did either. There is something worth discovering there, but that doesn't happen when you and I have been placed on opposite sides does it?

More than tears is coming. Inevitably, it will be your tears as well. When you realize that the power you so cravenly elected does nothing for you either. In 4 years, there will be no positive change. No restoration of our civil rights. Better jobs (not fucking shit service jobs with poverty wages) will not arrive. The entire time at odds with the other half standing in unity to stop you by whatever means. What do you think will happen when those sick people that needed the insurance, now have nothing like before? Do you really believe you can pull that off with the levels of suffering we have now? That those affected will simply disappear into the ditches and provide you *nothing* to deal with (read: spend money and time)?

You're celebrating nothing but a Pyrrhic victory while the storm forms on the horizon soon to sweep us all to hell. When we get there, we can come back to you and ask you how you enjoyed the tears.

Were the tears good? Were they worth it? Was your life made better by them?

That sounds bad till you realize that 1% of our population is over 1 million people and the count stands around 600,000 with a few million votes left uncounted. It matters. Even at 1%. Is your position that a million people don't count?

Whatever anyone says now, he objectively lost the popular vote. Obviously that means the Electoral College is a piece of shit and badly in need of calibration. The fact the Trump won means it's also broken when he lost the popular vote. I would see the popular vote win every time regardless as it disallows a serious element of dissent added to our politics when we damn well somebody should have won (Gore), but we had to accept the unacceptable (Trump).

If Trump won the popular vote, that would actually be a very compelling reason for reasonable people to give him a chance. It would give me pause realizing that truly the majority decided this. As it stands, we need to just accept a vote for Armageddon, even though we all know it really wasn't. It's just an obedience towards a stupid voting platform with known flaws, as if that is truly more important than the core values of America now relegated to the trash bin.

So, remember that 3/5ths things in the US constitution? Where slaves counted as 3/5ths of a person? What the hell was that about?

Turns out it was about the electoral college. Even though slaves could not vote, they still counted towards the calculation of electoral votes. Is that shit messed up or what?

The line they teach us in high school civics class about the electoral college being a way to make sure everybody is represented is just one of those lies of convenience we tell ourselves to avoid acknowledging yet another way racism defined our country.

In reality the electoral college is the antithesis of the one-man one-vote principle that we also tell ourselves is a fundamental principle of american democracy. The very fact that it is possible to lose the popular vote and still win the election is empirical proof that this country is not operating on the basis of one-man, one-vote.

The saying comes from MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online) computer games with player-versus-player conflict. Basically, some incompetent dies in a game battle and then complains bitterly on a public forum about their humiliation. It's to remind the whiners that the people who supposedly instigated this little drama not only don't take it seriously, but find it quite amusing. It is a reward for skullduggery well done.

edIII could have come up with all sorts of serious and even effective ways to express his displeasure. The powerless whine however is just a source of amusement. Just like some whiner complaining that say, mean people blew up his toy computer spaceship, edIII's whine is a tempest in a tea pot. Sure, perhaps Trump is a milepost towards the end of US democracy just like the Gracchi brothers' populism [wikipedia.org] was a milepost in the end of the ancient Roman Republic. Sure, populists tend to have a lousy track record (and Trump has demonstrated a fair number of problems, even for a presidential candidate), but it wasn't going to be any better if an establishment Republican or Clinton won.

I'm calmly explaining what is to come.

There's a reason it's called "tears" instead of "calm explaining".

I won't delight in your inevitable tears, but simply lament that so many were so ignorant

We'll see when it happens. It would help if you lamented your own ignorance now rather than wait a few years to lament mine. More productive you see.

Class war. The prophecy that the have-notes will rise and unite one day. One day. They are just too stupid to unite though.

Guess what, they are united. They were divided by the liberuls (and don't use no-true-scotsman now). They are united, they just don't want the same things.

The only blind person, the only person with no clue, is you. Like a badly behaved kid who lost his taser gun to the adults, the only sad part is looking at the stalwarts of 'truth' going through all the stages of grief. Trump won because people think liberals can take a hint from a failure. I don't think so. May time prove me wrong, but right now what you should be thinking about, instead of hating on Trump voters, is what were you doing when Obama didn't close Guantanamo Bay? Where were the weepers and the trash burners when Obama was busy consolidating extra-judicial killing power to executive branch? Racist america??? Really???? The same america (and literally the same people) who voted for Obama - twice - are now racist.

Democrats got the power. Obama got all the power he needed. Hillary got power before some of were born. Bill Clinton defeated Paula Jones in state and was emboldened to fuck around with Monica and then to lie to the whole nation and guess what, no democrat voted on merit. (Some thing about elites you were saying.) And Hillary Clinton, what is the word, 'slut shamed the victim of sexual assault'. He is actually lucky, Bill, today a hundred women would have stood-up, recounting the horrors [youtube.com], like they did against Trump just before the election.

Liberals got the power and used it against the racist misogynist homophobic xenophobic cis-het white male non-college-going working population that gave rise to freedom of speech, freedom to a peaceful protest and liberalism.

The middle class rose and broke into two - and the upper part pushed the lower back into poverty to become the rich class.

The class war just happened, and you lost.

The thing that you don't seem to understand is that the people on the right (including myself) who are enjoying your tears and butthurt are only in that position because we are more inclined to respect competent authority as a result of understanding it.

Petulant children whine and stamp their feet when they lose. That is what the left is doing.
No, there absolutely were not week-long riots in the streets by middle-aged, job-holding, and child-raising responsible Republicans when Obama was elected. "Right wingers are so DUMB and racist and...DUMB! LET'S ALL GO WALK ON THE FREEWAY BECAUSE...DUMB!!!" is what the left is doing as a whole.

When a shitheaded snot-nose bully (And yes, the Clinton side are absolutely the bullies) gets his just desserts, schaudenfraude is absolutely understandable.

You are children who do not understand what it is to be a stern leader. You do not understand that a father refusing to open the door at 3AM for a guy who's car broke down a mile up the street has more to do with love for his family than hate for the outsider, and you do not understand that because you have never been in a position where you actually care, actually have authority, and actually make conscious decisions with it. The governments of Europe who have let millions of migrants into their countries leading to (in some cases) over 1000% increases in rape DO NOT CARE for their citizens. Trump does not hate outsiders - he LOVES America and ALL Americans.

Both sides want things to get better, but the Democrats think you get there with Free Candy and Republicans think you get there with hard work and vegetables.

There are so many things wrong with what you wrote above, including citing the blatant rape propaganda, but the above takes the cake. This might be how you think you are acting, but in reality you don't appreciate hard work at all. The people working two or three jobs, and that still have to collect wellfare are the ones doing the hard work. The robber barons just sitting on their asses abusing the corrupt system and unwilling to pay their employees a living wage, which incidentally are the same ones you keep voting into power, are certainly not.

" in reality you don't appreciate hard work at all. "

I'm in my early twenties and making well over 6 figures a year (before all of those taxes for everyone's free candy) right out of trade school - where I put in 5 20 hour days a week between full time school and full time work, which included weekends (just 8 hour days).

I have absolutely taken notice of my peer group - 20-somethings who are BARELY willing to show up to class, NOT willing to stay late because "I want a social life, too", and who ALL wanted Bernie to win so their 100k Fine Art degree debt would be forgiven.

"he robber barons just sitting on their asses abusing the corrupt system and unwilling to pay their employees a living wage, which incidentally are the same ones you keep voting into power, are certainly not."

You have absolutely no idea how the world works if you think that the people working their asses off as janitors (of which I was one - actually, was 3 at the same time, at different places) can change the system we have. Hillary is the EMBODIMENT of the corrupt system which allows robber barons to exist. You think that hugs and kisses and tax increases will stop the robber barons? You're out of your mind. Obamacare is a perfect example - a well-intentioned policy that was an absolute DISASTER because it was the robber barons (insurance companies) who wrote it to fool the Little People into thinking they had a chance. It would have been the same with Bernie.

When you are a Little Person, you cannot fight a big person, you need a Big Person to fight for you. Hillary is a puppet. Trump is a free man.

Oh, and incidentally, Barack Obama was President for the past EIGHT YEARS.

He increased the debt to 20 Trillion and in exchange got the country...? Less jobs, more racial division, more terrorism around the globe, and a build-up to a war with Russia to protect Saudi Arabia and their ISIS friends. (No small thanks to Clinton)

Tell me again how we need MORE of that kind of progressivism?
