Marijuana use may increase the chances of developing an often temporary but still frightening heart condition, suggests new preliminary research presented this week at the annual American Heart Association Meeting.

Researchers analyzed records from the country's largest database on hospital stays, called the National Inpatient Sample (NIS). They looked at over 33,000 people hospitalized with stress cardiomyopathy, better known as "broken heart syndrome," from 2003 to 2011. When they focused on the 210 patients who reported using marijuana soon before they experienced its telltale symptoms, which closely resemble a heart attack, they found noticeable differences between them and the typical sufferer. Not only were these patients often younger men instead of older women, but they had fewer known risk factors for the condition, like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. They were also slightly more likely to go into cardiac arrest and require an implanted defibrillator to prevent later cardiac events (2.4 percent vs 0.6 percent).

These differences could indicate that marijuana alone can increase the risk of stress cardiomyopathy, the researchers concluded. After accounting for other known factors, they estimated that users were nearly twice as likely to develop it than non-users.

I'd be suprised if jmorris himself can tell when he's being sarcastic. As often (but not always) is the case, if he is not, then what he is saying is upside-down: marijuana in almost all of its forms is still illegal under the US federal law, and there are still what like a million people in prison/jail for possession of trivial, personal use quantities. Even in the states which legalized the smoking of much safer marijuana, tobacco users still enjoy more freedoms. On top of that, a significant portion of people who would like to see recreational drugs decriminalized are in fact suggesting more regulation across the board, not less. My personal opinion is, all recreational drugs (even really bad one, like alcohol, tobacco, heroin, and cocaine) should be decriminalized, regulated, taxed, studied, and treated as a manageable public health issue first of all. All recreational drugs proven to be a health hazard should come from dispensaries, they should all have plain packaging, their public use should be controlled, and advertizing them commercially should be illegal.

jmorris' bashing of an imaginary and cartoonish marijuana supporter would be valid of course, if such people and discourses actually existed in the real life, and I am sure they do, but I doubt very much these are prevalent opinions even among the supporters of legalization.

Yeah our resident conspiracy diva J-Mo is several hundred sausages, 50 gallons of Spotted Cow, and an entire live band short of a Bratfest, isn't he? :/ Makes me wonder what his particular chemical vice is. And whether it's usually stored under the sink.
