Soon to be upon us is Black Friday — the time of year when retailers try and outdo each other to corner extra sales. In recent years, retailers have been springing their deals earlier and earlier trying to get a jump on the other retailers. Some amazing deals can be had if you know where and when to look.

In light of that, what things are you hoping for? New computer? Mobile phone? Tablet? Game?

Alternatively, what great deals have you found (both on-line and brick-and-mortar)?

I think it would be wonderful if someone, by posting a wishlist item here, were able to find a great deal known by someone else in the community.

That's a very nice idea, especially for those of use that are reasonable well-off. My female-unit and I do exchange gifts, but they're rarely extravagant. We make donations to the Humane Society or other charities that could really use the money ... certainly more than I need another useless gift. For family and friends, we'll generally just visit (more of a punishment than a gift) or drop off homemade preserves or other homemade items. Even for gifts between each other, we tend to go more for consumables that the other would rarely treat themselves with, like a really nice bottle or Scotch or wine, or very good quality chocolate.

The exception is when I see something that's perfect for someone, or I know they need something and won't buy it for themselves.

Well, and that's basically the thing that sold them on it. I was on the phone with Mom when she was wanting to know what I wanted for Christmas, and I said, "Look, you guys already get whatever you want when you want it. I already get whatever I want whenever I want it. By definition, we're only buying each other stupid crap for the sake of giving something to each other. Lets just stop and make dinner together or something, okay?" She wasn't happy about it, but she did see my point.

Not Christmas, but I got stuck working last Thansgiving and didn't get to be with my family, who are about a three hour drive from me. Some very good friends of mine brought over some leftovers from their dinner once I got home. That was probably the most touching gift I've received to date.
