A powerful earthquake rocked northern Japan early on Tuesday, briefly disrupting cooling functions at a nuclear plant and generating a small tsunami that hit the same Fukushima region devastated by a 2011 quake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake, which was felt in Tokyo, sent thousands of residents fleeing for higher ground as dawn broke along the northeastern coast.

[...] There were no reports of deaths or serious injuries several hours after the quake hit at 5:59 a.m. local time. It was centred off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of about 10 kilometres, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

NewsHub (New Zealand) reports:

Small tsunami waves have hit a number of cities on the eastern coast of Japan after a 6.9 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the country.

The waves ranged from 90 centimetres [3 feet] in height at Soma Port in Fukushima to a 60 centimetre wave [in] Onahama Port in Fukushima.

[...] In [the city of] Iwaki [in Fukushima Prefecture], a man recorded[1] a [...] wave just after 7am local time.

[...] The Meteorological Agency says a tsunami measuring 1.4 meters [4.6 feet] reached Sendai port in Miyagi [Prefecture, just north of Fukushima Prefecture].

Early projections had been as high as 3 meters (10 feet).

A-yup, that's the one I felt this morning just as I went to sleep. My thoughts were, "oh crap, not now, I'm too tired to evacuate"... Went back to sleep as soon as it subsided. I'm too used to this shit :/

I'm in Tokyo, so it wasn't that strong. Nothing fell of the shelves, which is my reference point for a strong earthquake since the Tohoku quake 5 years ago, when things did fall off even in Tokyo.

It was long, though... I think that the shaking continued for almost a minute, while usually it's over in a few seconds.

There was a stronger-than-usual shaking the evening before, too. Don't know if it's connected to this one.

... There is already a Wikipedia page [wikipedia.org] about this earthquake. Comparing the map to the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011 [wikipedia.org], this one is to the southwest, a bit down the coast (Wolfram Alpha [wolframalpha.com] says about 132 km, or 82 miles).

The official earthquake information page (in English) [jma.go.jp] of the Japan Meteorological Agency has detailed information about the intensity at each measuring station (you can click on the map to zoom in). Be aware that these information pages are not permanent and are removed after a week or so. The following pages also show that there have already been dozens of aftershocks in the 3-5 magnitude range throughout the day, with two largest ones of 5.4 [jma.go.jp] and 5.5 [jma.go.jp] magnitude within the first hour.

Forgot to add, here [jma.go.jp] is the first tsunami advisory after the earthquake (also with a map). If you keep clicking on "next information" you can see how it was changing in the following hours.

The whole tsunami information timeline with links is here [jma.go.jp].
