TVGuide says:

Star Trek: Discovery is an agonizing almost year away, but here's something to help hold us over until May 2017: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh has been cast as a Starfleet Captain, Deadline reports.

Though Discovery's main character will have a female "Number One" serving as lieutenant commander on the Federation starship Discovery -- don't look for Yeoh on that vessel. She'll reportedly play Han Bo, leader of the ship Shenzhou. That means the lead character, rumored to be another non-white female, may be second in command.

That wouldn't be the first time the main character isn't a commanding officer on Star Trek -- Benjamin Sisko, played by Avery Brooks on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, rose through the ranks after starting as commander -- but then, this iteration of the franchise is expected to explore all kinds of new dimensions, including having at least one gay character.

Do Trekkies approve?

I agree with your main points.

However, I thought Voyager did a great job casting and that Janeway was a great fit for a captain. She didn't have to "try" to be tough, she just was. I think adding 7of9 to the show did wonders for it as well. Obviously she was nice to look at, but more importantly she was very smart sounding, convincing and a versatile actress. Chakotay was excellent. Harry Kim was also great but I can't believe he was never promoted beyond Ensign! I binge watched Voyager on Netflix and enjoyed almost all the episodes. Neelix though.. gotta love to hate him. :)

I thought ST:TNG's acting in the first season was fairly awkward, but the cast seemed to fill out their roles and gel together as the seasons went on. I wouldn't center out Wesley Crusher for awkwardness - he played an inquisitive, enthusiastic adolescent pretty well. Aren't kids that age supposed to be a little awkward? A shame he didn't stay on the show. Overall, I feel the cast gelled better as the show progressed. Their "First Contact" movie is my favourite of all the Trek movies (including the new ones).

Couldn't get into DS9 for some reason.

I like shows with a variety of racial backgrounds and genders, more than I would if any single one were chosen. I think it's healthy to promote diversity, but I have to say I feel somewhat off-put by some reporting (like this article) where the entire focus is on whether someone is black or Chinese or female or gay.. let's talk about their talent and what they bring to the show first and foremost.
