According to this article, Vancouver, Canada officials have put out a report that lays out options for dealing with sea level rise. Three generic strategies evaluated are: Adapt, Protect, or Retreat, the last of which means that for some parts of the city, people might just need to "get out of the way". In that case, the city would buy up homes and remove infrastructure over a period of several decades. It's not an easy thing to ask for people to leave their homes decades before an area is flooded.

By the year 2100, 13 square kilometers of Vancouver (containing around 4,000 households worth $7 billion) will be on floodplains so action needs to be taken soon to protect them. Areas like Jericho Beach and the Fraser River are already experiencing more frequent flooding.

First, Vancouver will publicize its plans then gauge public reaction. The world will be watching.

This "report" is only to distract people from realizing just how much the mayor of Vancouver likes the taste of land developer cock. Seriously, are we to expect a municipal government plans (or even cares) a decade in advance? It's pretty much amateur hour in Vancouver's city hall and people are waking up to that fact. That's the real reason for this useless noise.

This guy claims Robertson is blowing developers, and another one says that Robertson is a leftist loony because of his inability to
    control the school board.

Being mayor of Vancouver is a shitty job - nutcases from everywhere come out of the woodwork. Robertson has his third term, and
he'll be glad to get out.

Being the mayor of Vancouver is doing a shitty job. FTFY.

Yes, civilized people in a first-rate first-world country do expect that. Now shoo away and let the adults do the talking.

No. Civilized people in most first-rate first-world countries have learned that politicians never seem to be able to see past the next election. People see that politicians (particularly municipal politicians) are mostly interested in building their own empires and lining their own pockets with money and do so in the most blatant of ways. Now shoo away with your naive, bright-eyed dreams of honest politicians and let the realists talk.

In other words, politicians are almost exactly like short-term thinking business people, except instead of blindly focusing on turning a profit any way possible over the next 1/4 of a year, they're focused on the next 4-ish years.

Actually this is what khallow has been saying needs to be done - weigh the costs against taking preventative actions vs doing nothing and moving everyone off the land as it sinks. I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in yet.
