On the sixth anniversary of the first infamous "Cablegate" by WikiLeaks, when it releases its first batch of sensitive US files, on November 28 2010, it has expanded its Public Library of US Diplomacy (PLUSD) with 531,525 new diplomatic cables from 1979.

In a statement to coincide with the release of the cables, known as "Carter Cables III", Mr Assange explained how events which unfolded in 1979, had begun a series of events that led to the rise of ISIS.

He said: "If any year could be said to be the "year zero" of our modern era, 1979 is it."

Mr Assange said a decision by the CIA, together with Saudi Arabia, to plough billions of dollars into arming the Mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan to tackle the Soviet Union, had led to the creation of terror group al-Qaeda.

This, in turn, he said led to the 9/11 terror strikes, the invasion of Afghanhistan and Iraq by the US, and the creation of ISIS.

    I prefer this rendition. [youtube.com]

Also, fun fact: Hitler was nominated for the 1939 Nobel peace prize. Stalin for the 45 & 48.

    Anybody can be nominated.
    Hitler's nomination was ironic.

Stalin was nominated for his part in ending Hitler. That was reasonably legit. Few successful monsters are 100% evil. That's how they achieve success.

Up until September 1939, a lot of people were able to convince themselves that appeasement was working and that Germany would simply consolidate the lands that they had somewhat spurious claims to and then stop. In 1945, Stalin had helped end the Second World War. The UN was created in 1945 and Stalin's USSR had a seat on the security council. If Stalin had been a little bit less restrained, then the Soviet tanks would have kept going through Germany all the way to Portugal. It's doubtful that the allied armies would have been able to stop them and extending the conflict would have shown the advantage of the shorter supply lines to Russia than the USA. They probably wouldn't have been able to invade the UK, but the UK wouldn't have been able to afford to maintain the same level of military readiness as during WWII and the USA may well not have helped, given the distances involved.

The fact that we're not living in a Philip K. Dick novel's post-nuclear-apocalyptic wasteland is probably the strongest argument that Stalin contributed quite a lot to peace. Consider what would have happened if someone like Hitler, with his track record of fighting battles that he had absolutely no chance of winning (like the invasion of Russia) would have done with command over the nuclear arsenal that Stalin had.
