On the sixth anniversary of the first infamous "Cablegate" by WikiLeaks, when it releases its first batch of sensitive US files, on November 28 2010, it has expanded its Public Library of US Diplomacy (PLUSD) with 531,525 new diplomatic cables from 1979.

In a statement to coincide with the release of the cables, known as "Carter Cables III", Mr Assange explained how events which unfolded in 1979, had begun a series of events that led to the rise of ISIS.

He said: "If any year could be said to be the "year zero" of our modern era, 1979 is it."

Mr Assange said a decision by the CIA, together with Saudi Arabia, to plough billions of dollars into arming the Mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan to tackle the Soviet Union, had led to the creation of terror group al-Qaeda.

This, in turn, he said led to the 9/11 terror strikes, the invasion of Afghanhistan and Iraq by the US, and the creation of ISIS.

None of the current actions stand in isolation of the previous actions. Carter is just as responsible in that chain. Bottom line was he was in charge while the CIA did all of its fun stuff in Iran and Iraq. Regan stirred it up more in Afghanistan and Syria (iran contra ring a bell?).

All to thwart the red menace. Make no mistakes about it. They *were* a menace. They usually promised the rebels the sky then quickly put in their own puppets and murdered the rest. Much like the US was doing.

somehow no one saw fit to repeal this ticking time bomb that finally exploded 30 years later
Because there was no reason to. Up until recently this group was rather quiet and mutually beneficial. The Russians see a weakness and they are exploiting it. The American people do not have the stomach for all out war. The Russians do. They both wrote the book on how to subvert the other through the use of proxy players.

Statements like that you are trying to make do things like boil the civil war down to 'just slavery'. That was a major component but there were others as well. Mostly economic and one side exploiting the other. Slavery became the line in the sand as it were.

The excuse for most war is ideological. The reasons are usually monetary.
