Thailand has its first new monarch in seven decades after Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn was formally proclaimed the 10th king in the Chakri Dynasty.
Vajiralongkorn, 64, accepted the military-backed legislature's invitation to become King Rama X. The move announced Thursday was expected given that Vajiralongkorn was the only son and designated heir of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died Oct. 13 at age 88.

"Nearly everyone expects the monarchy to shrink and change in function after succession." The royal palace doesn't comment on political matters.

A new figurehead for the secret police and military dictators of Thailand to "protect" by arresting dissenters.
"Military corruption in local bureaucracies?" They'll say. "How can you personally insult our glorious King Rama 10 like that! To jail with you."
But it'll be great, because just like the previous king, Rama won't really like that it's happening and he'll be such a nice public figure trying to help the people.

Inherited Monarchy is balls. If only democracy were putting on a grand show of how much better it was right now, instead of whatever it is it's doing.
