Michael 'Jim' Delligatti, the inventor of the Big Mac, has died aged 98.

Just how he made it that far, given his fondness for the lard-laden double-decker, is anyone's guess.

Delligatti cooked up the Big Mac in 1965 when, as one of McDonalds' early franchisees, he felt the menu needed a rival for local burger bars' two-storey offerings. In 1967 he put it on the menu at his Uniontown, Pa, restaurant.

McDonalds like what it saw and took it national by 1968.

The rest is history: the Big Mac went on to become a symbol of American culture and capitalism, was accused of felling rainforests and contributed to unknown quantities of myocardial infarctions.

Messiah, or mass-murderer?

    'unhealthy'...
not even sure what that means anymore...

confession time: sure, i can bash mickey d's with the best of them, but you know what, i eat there about 4 days out of the work week...
it is a half mile away, reasonable price ($5.62 for my salad, which is all i get), not crowded if i drive-thru at 12:03 (back in the office break room eating at 12:10), AND i get the same thing every time: bacon/ranch salad with crispy chix... (use my own italian dressing)
AND it has always been fresh, never wilted, always been reasonable (if not packed) amount (cheaper salads at grocery store are MUCH smaller, more expensive salads with crap i don't want are about the same size), and has enough variety for me...
(downsides: the couple carrot 'slices' are micrometer-thin; *sometimes* they forget the cherry tomatoes, or the cheese is nearly non-existent, but that is 1 out of 10-20)
however, i will get me a big mac/fries every 3-4 months, just for hedonic self-indulgence...
tastes good, haven't died yet... 8^)
(for the 5th day of the work week, i go to a local bbq place and get ribs and fried okreeeeeeee ! ! ! piggy good !)
