A perfectly normal weather event is occurring in Hawaii today.

The summits of Hawaii's Big Island could get more than two feet of snow, with a winter storm warning in effect through Saturday.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through Saturday evening for elevations above 11,000 feet. The summits could get 20 to 30 inches of snow through Saturday, CBS affiliate KGMB.

An upper level low pressure area has brought the sub-freezing temperatures and unstable conditions. The low will combine with moisture surging in from the southeast, which could result in bursts of heavy snow, especially above 12,000 feet.

Conditions on the summits are dangerous. Besides being cold, east to southeast winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour are expected with higher gusts. The strong winds also will cause drifting snow, and freezing fog will reduce visibility to as low as a quarter of a mile.

snow line is the technical term for the altitude where permanent snow cover exists

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_line [wikipedia.org]

It comes up in daydreaming about scheduling amazing hiking vacations.

Note that its like flood maps in that the exact definition is very open to manipulation and just because I plan to hike in the rockies in August doesn't in any way force Mother Nature to not totally F up my plans. Its still usable for general trail planning purposes in a place like Rocky Mountain Park, you can kinda make a pack of trails you want to hike in the normal, warm, and cold categories and then show up and see what happens. Some day I'll get out there.

When I was a kid I loved family field trips on some of the mountain passes near the west side of the Tetons. Above the tree line and not quite to the snow line one could sometimes find snow in shaded areas. Snowball fights on the 4th of July. As a kid, lots of fun and at that time, sort of a tradition. Mom wasn't too thrilled but Dad smiled.
