OMG! Ubuntu! reports

[January 11,] the company announced the immediate availability of the Dell Precision 3520 mobile workstation (that's "professional laptop" to you and [me]).

Better yet, buyers can save over $100 by choosing Ubuntu 16.04 LTS pre-loaded instead of Windows 10--now that's what you call a deal!

[...] Dell's Barton George says more Ubuntu-powered Precision workstations will go on sale in the coming months, worldwide, including an Ubuntu version of the company's stylish new Precision 5720 All-in-One desktop PC.

Unlike other vendors, Dell [doesn't] ship their Linux option on no-frills reduced-power hardware. All models in the Dell Precision lineup pack powerful 7th generation Intel Core and Intel Xeon processors, support Thunderbolt 3 (ahem, USB-C), and can be kitted out with up to 32GB RAM!

The Dell Precision 3520 is available to buy & configure right now priced from $899 (base specs, with Ubuntu 1604 LTS). It ships worldwide.

4GB RAM, 500GB spinning Drive, 1366x768 resolution, and integrated Intel graphics all on an i5 that wikichip calls mid-range performance? And on sale for $1,000 with Windows 10? Is Dell competing with Apple now?

It strikes me as a $400 laptop. I guess the CPU is a little mid-high end, but like you said, there's no discrete graphics. Just glancing at the weight, it doesn't appear to be an ultrabook. It's easily $500 or $600 overpriced.

That last one is a Dell with 4K screen, a better i7 processor, double the RAM, 1 TB hybrid hard drive, discrete graphics. For $750. Somehow I believe that Ubuntu will run just fine on it.

Holy crap that seems like a could deal. Sucks that it's through the Microsoft store apparently, but anything in that range for that price is pretty impressive. Getting anything with a 1366x768 screen is completely insane these days (and really, 10 years ago).

Just watch the first link and you'll find what you want eventually from some other seller.

I'm not picking up anything before at least Zen for mobile comes out. Although a 6-core Coffee Lake from Intel in a laptop could be good.

Thank you. That was my first thought, too, but I thought I must have misinterpreted something. That $1000 configuration is anything but high-end, and if you do take the time to configure it so that it is high-end, it's not that much less expensive than a MacBook Pro.

But ten-times better, and with "real" USB ports to boot!!!

3x USB 3.0 and 1x USB Type-C does look like a good find for a 15.6" laptop, although it does nothing to justify the price which should be half of what it is.

The premium price can be explained by the complete lack of any real discount (10% is just trickery) and the inclusion of a Kaby Lake processor instead of Skylake. Kaby Lake's major new feature, hardware decoding of media like 4K H.265 10-bit video to improve performance and power consumption, does not apply because the screen resolution is a paltry 1366x768.
