Oman says it has accepted 10 inmates from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay ahead of President Barack Obama leaving office.

[...] Oman said it accepted the prisoners at Obama's request. It did not name the prisoners.

"To meet a request by the US government to assist in settling the issue of the detainees at Guantanamo, out of consideration of their humanitarian situation, 10 people released from that prison arrived in the Sultanate of Oman for a temporary residency," a foreign ministry statement said.

19 of the remaining 55 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay were cleared for release just days ago.

I was never much one for the party line, but after Obama it became clear that the will of the people no longer matters. Politicians will say whatever they have to in order to get elected, and even if one of them wants to do something good it can still be shutdown. I don't have an easy solution for how to make politicians accountable, and the decent ones get corrupted or disgusted with the whole affair.

You shouldn't lean any particular way, you should always go with the candidate you think is best. Is that a republican? A democrat? A libertarian? Who cares, vote for the best candidate!

It became clear with Obama? Boy, you're either very young or not paying attention. Howsabout Nixon?

Yes there were plenty of warning signs that such has been the case for a very long time, but people still had faith in the system. Nixon is ignored as a "bad apple", but Obama ran on some very big promises. Not only did he fail to deliver some important ones, but he caved to the Republicans and bastardized the things he was able to do... We all knew the system was corrupt, and Obama was the hope for change. Seeing how that panned out really drove the point home for a lot of people, the system is corrupt and can't be trusted.

Now Trump has done the exact same thing to Republicans, maybe 2020 will be the year we get over our partisan bullshit and elect a good president. If that fails again then I think this country is going to explode in various ways, none of them good in the short term.

I haven't made my mind up yet about Trump.

The organized attacks against him from the left and right alike are solid evidence that he is an 'outsider.' The notion of some great 'acceptable' leader is in my opinion a false goal. We deify people after they're dead if they achieved great things, but in reality they're invariably as flawed -if not more so- and eccentric in their own ways as everybody else. Trump acts like a clown on Twitter yet he's already simultaneously providing a great service to the left and right alike. The media has been colluding with politicians, again left and right, to maintain the power of the establishment. If the media reported honestly on Hillary vs Sanders it would have been a landslide, but they didn't. At the same time Sanders was showing huge margins of victory in general polls against every single republican candidate and Hillary was losing to every single candidate except Jeb Bush, they painted Sanders as 'unelectable.'

If people, at large, knew the mainstream media was as full of liars and bias as it is then we'd likely be talking about president Sanders today who might have been the 'good president.' In any case, what somebody does their first days in office clearly says nothing about what they'll do for the other 4 years, but so far I think Trump has been doing an excellent job and I'm more inclined than ever to give him a more fair shake.
