London-based fintech firm Trading.co.uk is launching an app that will generate trading alerts for shares based on Donald Trump social media comments. Watching the U.S. President-elect's personal Twitter feed has become a regular pastime for the fund managers and traders.

Trump knocked several billion off the value of pharmaceutical stocks a week ago by saying they were "getting away with murder" with their prices. Comments earlier this week on China moved the dollar and a pair of December tweets sent the share prices of Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) and Boeing (BA.N) spiraling lower.

    It's not a Trump story, it's a Tech story!

The '80s had the best coke, the best toys, and the best cartoons to go along with them. I'm shedding tears of joy now that America will be made great again, and for once I feel that my vote is actually counting for something.

I'm pretty sure you don't like Trump, but at least you can appreciate that he publicly talked shit to LockMart and Boeing.

And on-topic, of course, is that Twitter is helping Trump make stock speculation more efficient. I wouldn't be surprised if Twitter tanked themselves to spite Trump -- they do have a good excuse, lack of a business model and whatnot. The only thing keeping them afloat is probably money from intelligence agencies.

      You assume too much.

Trump doesn't seem to care about social conservatism, or is faking it. The one issue he has spoken strongly about, abortion, is the one least likely to see major changes, at least until he adds a second Supreme Court Justice. Abortion must always remain the red meat to attract the God-fearing to the polls, especially now that gay marriage is off the table.

I don't care much about his economic/health care positions. Presidents don't have that much effect on the economy, and health care is a giant red herring that must be tackled with (regenerative medicine) technology, not policy, to reduce the "inevitable" infinite Medicare/VA/social security costs (you can work at 90 if you look and feel like you're 40). His tanking of the TPP was intriguing, but we might see it return in some form since Republicans want it so much and it would be part of his pivot to fuck with China. Oh, and let him build his wall/fence. $10-20 billion is nothing and I hear seized drug money could be used. If they work it right, maybe we'll see the DEA's budget reduced to pay for the wall (fat chance)!

That leaves environment and science. On the environment, what happens with Trump's EPA is likely going to kill off some people. Onerous restrictions on business, meet lead/cyanide in the tap water. Industries self-regulate a lot more than they did in the early 20th century, so the effects might not be that bad. I'm sure some here would defend his EPA pick and plans, but they can drink some frackwater and fucking die.

Global warming doesn't matter much. The world will not be able to contain emissions until some time after renewables and fusion compete with coal/etc. on price. We have seen that China and India will do little to curb emissions as their middle classes expand and demand half of the living standards and energy consumption of Fatmericans. And African population is projected to grow to as much as 4 billion, with the potential for a big middle class and more GDP per capita than ever before (it helps that there are exploitable resources to sell to China and more stability on the continent than in the past). Gasoline-powered vehicles will need a long time to be phased out outside of the U.S. and Europe, and that's after the decades needed to transition here. Cash for Clunkers 2.0, anyone? It will be a shame for Trump to kill off Earth Science over NASA, which produces valuable data (or pretty pictures) regardless of what you believe about climate change, but it appears that Trump will be broadly supportive of NASA's missions. Maybe NASA's budget will double [dailycaller.com]? That would be a shock and not far from the quadrupling I would prefer. It's not clear whether the most attention will be paid to Mars or to solar system science missions, but it looks like the asteroid-related missions (like redirection or manned landing, not 16 Psyche exploration) could get shafted. That's too bad, but they will remain around for the taking soon enough.

As you hinted, Trump seems interested in renegotiating America's relationship with the military-industrial complex. Maybe even terminating the F-35 program. But his "Make America Strong" messaging and other promises make it seem unlikely that he will decrease defense spending by very much, enough to redirect money to say, NASA. He will merely nibble at individual programs, NATO, perhaps close a few overseas bases, etc.

The most consequential legacy of the Trump Presidency will likely be his Supreme Court picks. I will be interested to see how they handle various science and surveillance issues. I would have preferred liberals on the Court, but we have to live with it now. Best case scenario, the current Justices cling desperately to life and try to ride out a single term Trump Presidency... or at least until the 2018 midterms and the 116th Congress.

Trump's foreign policy could be alright or even great. Russia doesn't matter, China matters [nextbigfuture.com]. Taking the Taiwan phone call and hinting that Taiwan policy is negotiable is an interesting foreign policy bet. Trump has talked tough on Iran but it is not clear what his policy is (one of his top picks, "Mad Dog" Mattis, supports the Iran deal). Trump seems to want to keep us out of Middle East wars except for a little ISIS bombing. But it looks like Obama has pretty much wiped out the actual Islamic State leadership with drones, so Trump will take credit for it as expected. ISIS-inspired attacks seem likely to continue forever, but maybe they will become more feeble once the ISIS YouTube Control Room (a few dudes with laptops and pirated Adobe Premiere Pro) get annihilated.

Trump will likely be terrible on surveillance and civil liberties [soylentnews.org], just as Bush and Obama were.

It's easy to be optimistic about Trump when his positions are so unclear. We'll know more later in the year. I made this post so that I can have a single thing for others to refer to, rather than get involved in every stupid politics bitchfest.

Pence, however, does seem to care about social conservatism, or is faking it. If I were you, I'd keep my cocaine in a hollow pendant in the shape of a cross.

        Cash for Clunkers 2.0, anyone?

The first one was such a lovely market distortion we are just starting to get out from under it. "I can't afford a car" is what I hear from all young people. Guess what, they are right. The very cars they would have been buying to start out, are smashed into little cubes or run through the car shredder and melted down.

It's not clear whether the most attention will be paid to Mars or to solar system science missions
It is also not clear what the benefits are. Both the moon and mars are desert wastelands and deep gravity wells. The asteroid belts look much more promising for actual gain in both the science and material (win-win).

Iran but it is not clear what his policy is
My bet is box them in and back them down and then negotiate a deal with them.

ISIS-inspired attacks seem likely to continue forever,
My bet is a gang up on them with Russia and a cutting of funding. Look to the oil and the pipelines and money and you will see why Syria is happening. Also look for oil prices to shoot up again. The house of Suad is not going to like it.

        Taiwan policy is negotiable
Everything is negotiable with him. It is a mater of what you are willing to pay and what he will part with.

enough to redirect money to say, NASA
Look back at the history of the moon shot. NASA's greatest feat as a contractor negotiator. They basically got existing material and personnel from the Air Force. We had (and still do) have enough ICBMs to make it so you can walk from crater to crater around the world. Pealing off a small portion of the defenses budget to make the biggest statement ever. We can put a bomb wherever we want too (sputnick was the USSRs way of saying it). The space shuttle which was supposed to save us money ended up costing us so much more because its design became muddled in the bureaucracy of the CIA, NSA, and the AF with an unclear mission goal. Every administration since Ford has has a very erratic line of what should go on with NASA. It is at this point a very capable organization that knows what it is doing but gets jerked around depending on the political winds. Expect nothing very great out of them anymore other than the occasional science win.

It's easy to be optimistic about Trump when his positions are so unclear.
If you only ignore all of his websites and speeches.

As for the wall. If it puts even a slight dent in the human trafficking and graft that goes on I will call it a win.

Also do not watch his misdirection if you want to see what is going on. For every big thing he does there will be a silly crisis (odd rant, weird twitter posting, slightly wrong data). Guess who will eat it like a starved maniac that has not ate anything but crackers for a month. I watched one this weekend and just marveled how the media ate it up.

My bet is a gang up on them with Russia and a cutting of funding.

That seems likely. But an ISIS-inspired attack doesn't require an actual ISIS. Anyone can say that "ISIS made me do it", and many have. It's more hip and cool than Al Qaeda ever was, and it's not clear that crushing the organization will stop people already living in the West from committing attacks and doing it for the hypothetical utopian Caliphate. Of course, taking the free ISIS teen pussy out of the equation will deliver a severe blow to the cause, but c'est la vie.

If you only ignore all of his websites and speeches.

Sorry, you said it yourself with:

          Everything is negotiable with him.

Including his policy positions and alternative facts like whether it was raining at his inauguration [nytimes.com], etc. This is a man who will literally lie about the weather.

It would be amazing to see Twitter fail to monetize, crash and burn, despite being the official fireside mouthpiece of Lord Trump.
