It looks like Brian Krebs has been doing some digging trying to find out who authored the Mirai Worm that was used to force his site offline for a few days last year. The malware author goes by the handle Anna-Senpai, and Mr. Krebs believes he has unearthed his/her true identity:

On September 22, 2016, this site was forced offline for nearly four days after it was hit with "Mirai," a malware strain that enslaves poorly secured Internet of Things (IoT) devices like wireless routers and security cameras into a botnet for use in large cyberattacks. Roughly a week after that assault, the individual(s) who launched that attack — using the name "Anna-Senpai" — released the source code for Mirai, spawning dozens of copycat attack armies online.

After months of digging, KrebsOnSecurity is now confident to have uncovered Anna-Senpai's real-life identity, and the identity of at least one co-conspirator who helped to write and modify the malware.

The article is a good read and covers a lot of interesting ground within the botnet community.

I knew one guy like this. Brilliant, like sparkling rocket, fast. Back when computers were still expensive and not considered essential for study, he got one at the end of first semester. There he played Hitman 2 and got 'mass murderer' rating, then he played it again and got the silent assassin rating. He worked in silo, the other smart guys were too 'intellectual' for him. He introduced me to altavista.us and andr.net etc. - where you could get free simple hacking tools and program cracks. I got a lot of cred in my college riding on the knowledge of piracy that actually came from him, but he was too self-centered to bother about other people. At the end of fourth semester he was remotely deleting his lab-mate's notes because he hated him for not being cooperative enough. In 3rd year he gravitated towards a new bunch of friends and I almost stopped having any connection with him. Not sure how much he changed, he stopped doing coding at the end of final years (he was aeronautical engineer).

I seriously don't want to imply anything here - when I started writing this post I wanted to show how this behavior goes away and people become a productive part of society. I know he got married some years ago, and has a kid too. I just checked his linkedin profile - he is "Vice President at Deutsche Bank".

Hmm... it almost sounds like fanfiction about the LIBOR scandal.

Some are good people at Deutsche Bank. When I needed $640 million for my Chicago project, just a terrific project, they saw what a terrific project it is and they backed it. Deutsche have always backed my projects big league because they know how great I make my projects.
