The "six-strikes" Copyright Alert System is no more. In a brief announcement, MPAA, RIAA, and several major US ISPs said that the effort to educate online pirates has stopped. It's unclear why the parties ended their voluntary agreement, but the lack of progress reports in recent years indicates that it wasn't as successful as they had hoped.

[...] The "voluntary" agreement was praised by the US Government and seen as an example for other countries, including the UK, where a similar system is about to start. At the same time, however, the Copyright Alert System members have just ended their efforts.

"After four years of extensive consumer education and engagement, the Copyright Alert System will conclude its work," the members of the Center for Copyright Information (CCI) just announced.

"The program demonstrated that real progress is possible when content creators, Internet innovators and consumer advocates come together in a collaborative and consensus-driven process."

Whereupon the DHS (police, FBI, whoever) will come to your workplace with 10 armed officers, pull you out of a customer meeting in shackles and amongst a lot of commotion, question you for hours concerning your muslim-ness, your connections to the 24h-falafel shop around the corner, conclude that you are hiding something based on your travel history outside the US (France, Italy, Mexico) and finally torture you first a little, then more, until you tell them everything about your plans for setting a bomb at your local mall and your co-conspirators. The last part, of course, being a fabrication you thought up under undescribable agony.

Shit, I was just responding to a "+3 Funny" post with a weak attempt to provoke a new moderation "+3 Not funny at all".

And now I feel like puking because the above doesn't sound "totall unrealistic", or "movie-grade stuff". It sounds more like a moderately likely combination of multiple personal-judgement fuckups. The kind of fuckup that we hear about in the news every week when only a single one of them happened.

All I described has happened before, in the US, quite recently. Do you think the above combination would ever make the news, or the courts, nowadays? I don't. *That* scares me! And it should scare you.

When people yell about Trump being the next Hitler it isn't solely because of the man himself. The country has been sliding into nazidom for the last decade and a half, and Trump riding the wave of anger against Muslims does not bode well. Hopefully we naysayers are wrong, at least he got rid of TPP. Hopefully nothing worse replaces it, and hopefully they don't destroy net neutrality.
