New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has approved what will be the largest U.S. offshore wind farm when it's built off the east end of Long Island. It will generate enough electricity to power more than 50,000 homes on Long Island's South Fork.

The South Fork Wind Farm will consist of 15 wind turbines with 90 megawatts (MW) of capacity. While the project still needs to complete its permitting process, construction could start as early as 2019 and it may be operational as early as 2022.

The approval of the South Fork Wind Farm, to be located 30 miles southeast of Montauk, is the first step toward developing 1,000 megawatts (1 gigawatt) of offshore wind power in that area, Cuomo said in a statement.

Cuomo has set a bold vision for a clean energy future, and this project is a significant step toward making that a reality...," Deepwater Wind CEO Jeffrey Grybowski said in a statement. "There is a huge clean energy resource blowing off of our coastline just over the horizon, and it is time to tap into this unlimited resource to power our communities."

    I submit, my fellow Soylentils, that humans will never have enough power until we master nuclear fusion! Research so far suggests that small scale implementations are not going to succeed. So here is my idea. We could create a massive fusion reaction, but do it in space, where there is no need to "contain" the reaction, its own gravitational force would keep it together. Then we could place this reaction somewhere convenient, and just orbit it, and absorb energy from it in the form of radiation! Of course no doubt we would need some filtering mechanism to remove the more harmful bands of radiation, say, some kind of gaseous envelope and possibly a magnetic field to divert high energy particles. And it is even possible that we would be able to harvest differentials in the reception of this radiative energy, perhaps by intercepting currents and eddies in the the gaseous cloud that we will have enveloped our selves in. So again, I say we develop nuclear power, and use windmills to capture its energy for human use. And photovoltaic panels, of course.

    You haven't thought enough about storage, though. Using modern biotechnology, perhaps we could harvest the energy, and store it by, perhaps, reducing the copious carbon dioxide we now have down to long-chain carbohydrates and organic molecules. Ideally we would even have the biotechnological process embedded within the energy storage cylinders (better use of land is achieved if we stack these cylinders vertically, I'd suggest) themselves. If we can stockpile enough of these cylinders, perhaps we could create land-fills where the cylinders are further processed into hydrocarbons, which would have a higher energy density?

    Yes, the one thing that will make this currently-impossible technology easier is doing it in space.

      DeathMonkey! The point is, it has already been done! The fusion reactor is called "The Sun"! Get it? Wind energy is solar energy, and so it is nuclear-fusion powered. Sometimes, someone just has to explain everything, I guess.
