From BBC Television News:

An attack has occurred this morning when an individual carrying 2 backpacks and possibly weapons approached the Louvre in Paris and was engaged by a soldier who fired 5 shots. The assailant was wounded, as was a soldier during the attack. One report claims that the attacker shouted Islamic slogans during the attack.

1111GMT: A second possible assailant has been arrested. The French Govt have confirmed it is a terrorist attack.

1117GMT: It is confirmed that the first assailant attacked a soldier with a machete before being engaged and wounded.

1215GMT: Latest TV statements. The first assailant attacked a security officer and/or soldier with a machete causing wounds to his arm and face, while shouting "Allahu Akbar". A second soldier then engaged the assailant with rifle fire resulting in the assailant being seriously wounded in the stomach. The first assailant was carrying 2 backpacks but no explosives have been found in them. A search of the area is continuing. A second assailant has been arrested within the last hour a short distance away from the scene of the attack.

The Louvre Museum and the area around it is in lock-down, and the public and local workers are been evacuated from the area. The French Govt are releasing only statements that they can verify and are refusing to speculate any further during media questioning.

I guess sometimes it's handy having the EIC in country for the story. He can just watch the local news and type as is relevant.

I'll admit it, this is the first time I have seen breaking terrorist news on SN before anywhere else (working on something and glanced here before Google News).

Terrorist attack? A nutcase waving a knife now makes international news headlines just because he said the magic trigger words "Allahu Akbar"? If he'd forgotten to say that, would it have got any further than about page 3 of Le Monde, if that?

Seriously. Go put "knife attack" in Google News. Looks like there were at least three other knife attacks in the US in the last 24 hours. None of which made it past "page 3."

        " A nutcase waving a knife "

A nutcase waving a knife is no big deal here in the Land of the Free where I can own a gun.

A nutcase waving a knife, a couple nutcases waving guns, a nutcase with a bomb suit, a couple nutcases driving trucks, and a LOT of nutcases doing a LOT of raping (statistically, much higher than native populations) and they are ALL coming from the same cultural background...you must be willfully ignorant if you believe there is not a trend that should go noticed.

Since you reference statistics, let's see them.
Not anecdata, an actual comparison of crimes rates.
After all, that's the basis of your entire argument, right?

Huh, I thought he tweeted that a Moroccan was responsible along with FOX stating the same. True that there was no redaction after the tweet or follow up that I'm aware off.
Difference between serious journalism and fake news is that the serious journalist will apologize and retract after making a mistake (everyone makes mistakes), fake news will stick with their story or at best move on to the next outrageous lie.

The responsible Minister in France have released the following information regarding the attacker:

            • He is an Egyptian, currently resident in Dubai.
            • He arrived on a tourist visa for a 1 month stay, and was due to return to Dubai on Sunday 5 Feb.

Perhaps more significant is that neither Egypt nor Dubai are included in the 7 countries that the Whitehouse believes pose the greatest security threat. Nor was the assailant an 'immigrant' but rather a tourist, which contradicts what others have claimed ("Just call them what they are. Muslim immigrants.") in the comments to this story.

Trump tweets seem to be widely inaccurate considering that he is supposed to the be most powerful man on earth, and supposedly the most well-informed if we look how much is being spent to counter the threat.

Dry was referring to the white nationalist in canada - trump only had anything to say about that when he thought the guy was a muzzie from Morocco. Once the shooter's angry whiteness became undeniable, trump turtled up.
