Sanitation crews are working hard to dispose of six months' worth of garbage from a community the size of Wahpeton or Valley City. The mountains of debris need to be moved before the spring thaw occurs.

Making a dent in the immense amount of trash being hauled out of the Oceti Sakowin protest camp is being hindered by the weather. All the garbage that was left behind is now frozen into massive chunks of junk.

In a month, all this trash could become toxic.

[...] It's estimated it will take 250 trucks filled with litter to clear the camp.

Was all this left behind 'just because'?
    or
Was it left behind because they were all chased off and given no time to do the cleanup themselves?

    Both options are awful.

      The article is crap.
      This isn't reporting.
      This is stenography.
The idiot showed up, wrote down what Morton County's Reactionary officials said, then published it without any actual investigation.

There isn't a single word about any examples of what EXACTLY is in the trash that will magically turn "toxic".
N.B. Sara Berlinger is NOT a good source of useful information.

To avoid giving a pagehit to the stupid clickbait article, I got a Google cache of it. [googleusercontent.com]

At first, I thought all the content was behind scripts. Nope, that wasn't it.
To see the content, I had to open my AdBlocker and un-hide ##div.leftcolumn (ALWAYS bloat and useless garbage on a page--until I hit this stupid page).

So, their web guy is an idiot as well.
In an HTML-only presentation, the page's boilerplate text is a mess.
Some text overlaps other text, making that stuff unreadable.

          You are absolutely right.
gweg disgraced himself by trying to make a critique of the html of the website into a critique of the accuracy of the reporting.
fuck you gweg, you are part of the problem.

Here is some relevant criticism of the reporting. [thedailyhaze.com]

They claim the county is just moving trash around the area, not actually clearing it. I have no idea about the site's reliability, they obviously have a point of view though.

Perhaps. But that is speculation hence my question.

Another theory is they didn't pay for it so they didn't care and abandoned it. In this case their are big money interests on BOTH sides who want and do not want protesters. With that sort of money there could be shenanigans and paid protesters. However, THAT is speculation too.

Did they abandon all the crap in place? Or were they forced off?

Once Trump signed that order they had pretty much 0 reason to be around anymore. However, it could be the locals got tired of their shit... Again speculation and EITHER is a scathing remark on the whole mess.

Yeah, it looked mostly like camping gear. Tents, sleeping bags, chairs, and so on. I doubt it was easy to move large quantities of material in and out of that place. Normally hikers/campers are very trash conscious. Pack out what you pack in. The protesters might have come from cities or other environments where trash management is not something they normally dealt with. But i would imagine the protesters would have disposed of their trash if they had a way to do so.
