Autotrader reports a study:

Canadians looking to impress on their next romantic date might want to stay clear of on-demand car services, taxis or even public transit, according to the findings of a recent autoTRADER.ca survey that explores the role of the automobile in modern-day dating. In fact, a whopping 92 percent of Canadians say they find it appealing when their date shows up with their own ride. And don't even think about "borrowing the car" for the occasion – close to half of the population surveyed (48 percent) reported that they would find a borrowed vehicle unattractive or "embarrassing beyond words."

While it is unsurprising a publication called Autotrader would find car ownership is necessary for romance, do the study's claims track? Do today's humans really prefer being picked up for a date by someone who owns a car? Is being picked up on a motorcycle really the least attractive?

It never was, at least in my experience. If you needed a cool short to score a date, you must either either have lived in a public transit void or just asking the wrong ladies.

I met my first wife in San Francisco in 1987. She worked in The City and took cabs. I worked in the East Bay and rode BART. We lived downtown on the edge of the Tenderloin, on Geary near Van Ness. Neither of us had a car. Feet, cab, or Muni were sufficient. We dated for 2 years before we got married and only bought a car when we moved to Virginia. Hardly any of our city friends had, or needed, cars. Most were in relationships, wheels notwithstanding.

Are Canadians really that shallow, or is just that Autotrader is trying to sell cars to people who don't need them?

Public transit in this country sucks, good luck on the walking for what you need the cities/towns are not designed for that and if you need to take cabs your better off and it is cheaper to have a vehicle for that.

Did not have a car when I first started dating my wife and didn't get one until Wisconsin's communal property laws made her car our car when we got married.
