The Federal Communications Commission plans to halt implementation of a privacy rule that requires ISPs to protect the security of its customers' personal information.

The data security rule is part of a broader privacy rulemaking implemented under former Chairman Tom Wheeler but opposed by the FCC's new Republican majority. The privacy order's data security obligations are scheduled to take effect on March 2, but Chairman Ajit Pai wants to prevent that from happening.

The data security rule requires ISPs and phone companies to take "reasonable" steps to protect customers' information—such as Social Security numbers, financial and health information, and Web browsing data—from theft and data breaches.

"Chairman Pai is seeking to act on a request to stay this rule before it takes effect on March 2," an FCC spokesperson said in a statement to Ars.

The rule would be blocked even if a majority of commissioners supported keeping them in place, because the FCC's Wireline Competition Bureau can make the decision on its own.

As the orange one dropped TPP, I have a hunch you'll be safe from intrusion under TPP rules.
Otherwise, since ISP-es are no longer required to protect your data, maybe the safest solution is to store them in a vault... I don't know, somewhere in Utah? (grin)

TPP will just arrive in another 6 months under a new name.

Wanna bet it won't come back for US?
Because if it comes, the orange one will end his life in jail (if not assassinated before). He managed to upset some... ummm... "intelligence" agencies only last week; if he drops the "get out and try renegotiate TPP" promise made to those who voted for him, all (misdirected as it would be) goodwill reserve he's still benefiting of will be gone.

I think you meant renegotiate NAFTA? Yeah, he promised that. But, TPP is history - at least until the next election.

        Runaway almost nailed it.

We'll get TPP all right. Except it'll be the best TPP, it'll be a fantastic deal, Trump's negotiated a lot of deals, a lot of very good deals, he's very good at deals, and Trump will negotiate us the best TPP, the very best TPP. Trump will give us a very, very good TPP.

(It'll look strangely the same as the old TPP but instead it'll be the Trump Pacific Partnership so it'll be so totally different and the best, etc. Certainly not Sad!)
