America's new president gave an address to a joint session of Congress. The Los Angeles Times posted a full transcript of the speech (along with remarks from its staff that may require Javascript to view); Bloomberg uploaded a video of the event.

The New York Times called it "the most presidential speech Mr. Trump has ever given — delivered at precisely the moment he needed to project sobriety, seriousness of purpose and self-discipline."

    Painful speech

Trust a pig to bring the pork, hope everyone likes funding politician's bank accounts! I did like his uncomfortable smile when he promised to drop the price of prescription drugs, can we get his tax forms yet so we can all feel secure knowing that there are no conflicts of interest with our current president?

The whole speech is simply a better written version of his campaign promises, and looking at his actions and not his rhetoric my guess is that it is simply more hot air to keep his fanbase rabidly supportive. They will ride this speech for weeks feeling like they're winning everything. Win win win, money money money, fear fear fear. A pox on these slick shits. Oh wait, slick? A pox on these bumbling idiots, and a prayer for the 1/3 - 1/4 of the US population that falls for this bumbling bullshit.

What do you mean? Assuming that his smile is actually uncomfortable, what do you think that means? He doesn't believe that it will be possible, or he has no intention of doing so?

Trump is the one that has made the price of prescription drugs a national issue in the debate on health care, and he has been saying for quite a while that the pharmaceutical industry is out of control.

    Your whole comment seems unhinged.

Rhetoric, I guess you are not immune to his bullshit. If he believed in it, or at the least doesn't care about it, then he would have played the politician game to whip the people up about it like he does with other points. No, this one he delivered like it was a rotten apple.

Thanks for the downmod whoever, makes me regret upmodding a comment in another thread that seemed to be downmodded instead of "disagree". Happens a lot with my comments, though I will agree my initial one here was more "ranty" than most. However, you're a fool if you don't think the GOP is lining up massive tax-payer funded projects / legislation (tax breaks). Yup, they're looking out for YOUR best interest /s

I'm not guilty of downmodding you, but I have to admit the temptation was there. You seem to have some of that butthurt going around among liberals, and you make it pretty obvious in your post.

The speech was actually a pretty decent speech. It was much better than a lot of his off-the-cuff rhetoric over the past several months. But, you start talking about pigs and pork and other superflous bullshit.

Question: are you a better man than the freak SJW's, or are you just another ideologist who can't stand anyone with a different opinion? If you are the latter, you'll be downmodded frequently.

You know, that doesn't bother me. Well, good, I say; the State Department is populated almost entirely by the kind of elitist fuckers you find at Goldman Sachs or McKinsey. You can't fire or denigrate them enough, actually. How nice it would be to have a State Department that isn't an atavistic throwback to Ivy League Gentlemen's clubs circa 1890, and which actually reflected real America instead.

It would also be nice for Washington DC, the wealthiest part of the country, to feel jolts of fear and uncertainty about their futures after 40+ years of sticking it to the rest of America with impunity. Fire them all, move the capital to Denver, and re-form the government by hiring Americans who are actually competent in the various subject areas instead of peopling departments with patronage hires. I guarantee you putting the machinery of the country in a region where people still have a real work ethic and sense of pride in their work would give the country and world a nice boost for another 50-100 years. Also, it would be really fucking entertaining to watch all those lobbyists, lawyers, politicians, and bureaucrats trying to unload their McMansions in a property market that has suddenly collapsed.

Trump has no balls, he is a coward pushing an agenda, and you apparently are falling 100% for his bullshit. The only reason it gets me upset is because we need more support to push back against this fascist regime. This isn't a godwin, this isn't rhetoric, Trump is a total fascist who simply hasn't gotten the complete control he desires. If you can't see this then I don't know what to tell you except WAKE UP!

"when you blindly follow some ideology"

                And, what ideology is that?

"stated that the wall will be ineffective, and even if it does it may well hurt our agricultural sector"

When, and how did the first minimum wage law come to be? And, how did it come about that some very specific classes of workers were exempted from the minimum wage laws? Can you spell "graft" and "corruption"? There was no reason to make exempted classes of workers from the minimum wage laws, other than graft and corruption. At that point in history, farmers and ranchers had a lot of clout in Washington, and they held out for free or cheap farm labor. Food handlers and waiting staff were exempted from the same law, for very much the same reasons. If the cheap labor suddenly dries up, those farmers and ranchers may be hurt a little bit, short term, but the economy will heal over time.

Or - do you believe in our hidden class system, in which certain classes of workers can never "get ahead"?

Blah blah blah. Trump is a fascist, blah blah blah. When I see fascist, I'll let you know. Until then, you are the one who sounds like an ideologist.

Zz9zZ writes: "The whole speech is simply a better written version of his campaign promises"

This is apparently meant as a criticism, but...what precisely is wrong with repeating his campaign promises? Even the liberal media has to admit that Trump is keeping a lot of those campaign promises [politifact.com].

I think the problem is that some people don't like what Trump has promised to do. So they're upset that he is actually fulfilling those promises. Compare Trump's progress so far to Obama's lackluster record [politifact.com]. It's early days yet, but Trump is looking like quite the change from business-as-usual politics.
