from the minimalism dept.

Phys.org reports:

The idea of a life lived modestly is gaining traction. Ten years ago, Samantha Weinberg, a mother of two young children, spent a year not shopping. Her aim was to reduce her environmental impact. The next year, Mark Boyle, founder of the online Freeconomy community, embarked on a life without money in order to sever his connection with it. Since then, others have joined this "Not Spending" movement.

Frugality has its limitations. Not everyone is able-bodied enough to cycle, and if we all started foraging for wild food it would deprive non-human species of nutrients and disrupt local ecosystems. While minimalism has found new converts, especially in Japan, this extreme approach is unlikely to go mainstream.

Perhaps a more realistic hope is for a steady rise in the number of people who discover that pursuing non-material riches brings greater happiness than the getting and spending of money. In fact, significant numbers of "voluntary simplifiers" have been choosing and enjoying lives of material simplicity for decades.

Have Soylentils found greater happiness through simplification?

We've always had a 1 Bag Rule in my family.

I've got a single large seabag from my navy days.

It's nice to know that I can leave to anywhere on a moment's notice and not have to worry about trying to put shit in boxes, put boxes in a truck, drive the truck, pull the boxes out of the truck and pull shit out of boxes.

Everything you own fits in one bag, because everything that doesn't fit in there is what owns you.

How do you do electronics without an oscilloscope? or the seas without a boat? some stuff is necessary for doing some things.

Yup... over a lifetime, I have accumulated about one industrial garage worth of tools and equipment. Its all I have that means anything to me.

Its probably useless to anyone else. But I know what they are and how to use them. They enable me to design and build whatever I want.

I have been happiest sleeping in my lab.

Best of my knowledge, I have nothing that is a "status" thing, nor do I even want any.

Eventually someone will come up with a lab to extend life. And then they literally not need much else..

An interesting side problem will be how to handle government databases every 40 years or so.

        Interesting times, right now.
