KUOW-FM reports about two detention centres operated by The GEO Group, Inc., formerly called the Wackenhut Corrections Corporation (ticker symbol GEO). Detainees for the centres are provided by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement

A class action lawsuit says the company running an immigration detention center in Colorado is violating federal anti-slavery laws. It's the same company that runs the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, scene of an expanding hunger strike.

[...] Nina Disalvo is an attorney for the detainees in Colorado. She said it's illegal to pay them $1 a day.

"It's not the market wage that GEO would have to pay [...]," Disalvo said.

The Seattle Times via The News Tribune quoted a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson, concerning the hunger strike at the Tacoma facility:

"The sole detainee who is continuing to refuse meals has been allowed to remain in the general population, but the facility personnel are monitoring him closely," Kice wrote of the strike that began Monday.

Kice said about one-third of the civil detainees — who are awaiting immigration hearings or deportation — refused meals but, citing fluctuating numbers, did not provide exact numbers of those who participated in the strike. As of Friday morning, the population count at the facility was 1,401.

According to Free Speech Radio News,

In March, a federal judge approved class-action status for a lawsuit alleging at least 60,000 past and present detainees held at the Aurora ICE facility were forced to do janitorial work, clerical work, landscaping and other jobs for free or $1 a day.

Those who refuse are threatened with solitary confinement.

I realize that people are trying to approach this from an objective standpoint but please keep in mind that ICE are not nice [youtube.com]. It's truly not a large logical leap to imagine them abusing these people in more ways than just dropping them off in Tijuana to fend for themselves.

Nery Romero was a 22-year-old Salvadoran immigrant with no previous history of mental illness who committed suicide in his cell in the Bergen County Jail in New Jersey. At the time of his detention, he was recovering from surgery in which metal pins had been placed in his leg, seriously broken in a motorcycle accident, and was taking strong prescription painkillers. According to Romero's cellmates and family, authorities failed to provide Romero with painkillers despite his repeated requests.[30] In a letter written to his mother shortly before his death, Romero stated: "I'm in hell. They don't give me nothing for my pain."

It takes a truly subhuman entity to look at a man in the throes of post-surgery chronic pain and do nothing. [nytimes.com] They're another prime example of this country's encroaching fascism and the willfully ignorant citizens that accept it.

    P.S.

The evaluation identified lapses in documentationin the detainee's medical record. The
nursingintake screening form was not completedin its entirety. There was no Access to
Health Care Services signed by the detainee in his record. The officer's receiving
screening form states that the detainee had no medical problems and was not taking any
    medication

Sure makes this read in a different light:

Kice, the ICE spokeswoman, said in an email her agency would “like to think our ongoing dialogue with the detainees contributed” to the drop in participants, while adding, “I wouldn’t want to speak for them.”

    What a fucking pussy.

That lucky asshole said he was in hell? He should have had my mother. My mother denied me cold medicine as a child. My mother denied me pain killers after a back injury. My mother told me I should walk with a cane for the rest of my life. Eventually I regained full range of motion, no thanks to my mother.

Fuck that guy! Free citizens have worse lives than him!

I was paralyzed by my back injury to the degree that I couldn't walk or stand and I had to crawl to a phone to call an ambulance.

Arthritis? Arthritis?? That's nothing! You stupid presumptuous piece of shit. You have no idea how debilitating a back injury can be or how painful it is.

Just from curiosity: have you killed her yet? If not, when are you planning to do so?

He can't ride a motorcycle because he can't get a license... even if only because he can't take a driver test because he CAN'T BE HERE. Attempting to do such a thing should get him arrested.

He can't get pins in his leg because he can't pay for it. Oh wait... I'm paying for it... thanks Reagan. In any case, he can't get the pins because he CAN'T BE HERE and thus would be thousands of miles from the hospital.

Now, that mother... has she been deported yet? What about the other criminals, the ones who helped him to evade our laws? By that I mean the landlord, the employer, all the doctors, etc. Every last one of them is a criminal.

You might have sympathy, and be willing to pay the medical fees of, a burglar who trips and hurts himself while skulking around your house in the dark.

But if you take my money to pay for his medical fees, you are now the burglar. Repeat ad nauseum to the destruction of society. The buck will stop at the first, "Cruel, heartless scum" who prioritizes somebody contributing to society rather than a criminal, and society will continue - doing more good than would have been possible otherwise.

It truly amazes me that we have proven techniques like Norways' rehabilitation system and yet here in america there are idiots so brainwashed they can look at torture and think someone deserves it because they came from elsewhere and committed a crime (would you let an american be tortured under the same criteria?). Then have the fucking gall to pretend they're responsible citizens, or have a choice in what their money is used for. Which is just laughable. You're even less powerful on an individual level than guantanamo bay inmates. Because they get that healthcare you hate paying for so much. Right after we torture them too. But they still have more political pull than you do nonetheless.
