Canadian authorities caught 887 asylum seekers crossing unlawfully into Canada from the United States in March, nearly triple the number in January.

This brings the total number of asylum seekers caught walking across the border to 1,860 so far this year. The new statistics suggest those numbers could rise further as the weather warms.

Canada is on track to see the highest number of asylum claims in six years, given the pace of claims filed so far, as increasing numbers of people cross into Canada to make refugee claims in the wake of US President Donald Trump's election and his crackdown on refugees and migrants.

"The majority of irregular migrants are holders of visas for the United States," according to a statement released Wednesday from the office of Canada's Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale.

Isn't fleeing to Canada to escape what's happening in the US rather like fleeing to Poland to escape what happened in Germany?

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau is A) setting hard limits on immigrants, B) kicking out illegals and C) not letting single males into the country, even refugees. But since he's a young handsome Liberal, he will get absolutely no bad press by the same Media-Industrial Complex that is currently demonizing Donald Trump.

Canada will accept only whole families, lone women or children in its mass resettlement of Syrian refugees while unaccompanied men – considered a security risk – will be turned away.

Canada's prime minister is refusing to increase the number of refugees admitted to the country, even amid international backlash over the plight of Alan Kurdi, a boy who drowned after his makeshift ferry capsized off the coast of Turkey while trying to get to Canada. News emerged Wednesday night that the toddler and his family had been refused entry into Canada, but on Thursday relatives clarified that it was Alan's aunt and uncle, and their children, who had been denied refugee status by Canadian authorities. Alan, his five-year-old brother, and his mother all died while trying to flee from Turkey to a remote Greek island. Only their father, Abdullah, survived. The family was displaced from their home in Kobane, Syria, after intense fighting between the so-called Islamic State (IS) and Kurdish militias.

In a world now dominated by unapologetic identity politicians there is no excuse to fail bad enough at your job that even a notoriously fascist-friendly set of media outlets will make fun of you. Especially when you're a cult leader. Who operates entirely on encouraging love and support at the cost of critical thinking.

Trump is so fucking incompetent at his job that he can't even get the kiss ass WH press corps to be nice to him. That's playing softball and then switching out the softballs for pillows. Yet he's still a fuckup.

Trudeau as I recall was competent enough at appearing to be a hero that he was prepared for Trump's intimidation tactics. Trump had no recourse but to look even more stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm indifferent to him besides his weed politics and I hold no illusion whatsoever about Clinton. But they're both competent at appearing to be intelligent and shrewd politicians. Trump can't even manage that. Not sure why you think there's some kind of unfair standard going. He just sucks at something he claims to be good at. Which is not new for him.

Trudeau has made Canada's position very clear [globalnews.ca]

To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada

As for the articles above, You've misinterpreted both of those links. Those restrictions were from the program to relocate people directly from Syria and other priority areas. I.E. The Canadian Government brought Refugees over here at taxpayer expense. It's akin to the "Women and Children First" policy for lifeboats, there are so many possible applicants, they had to prioritize somehow, and there are only so many resources available.

The Canadian government brought over 26000 refugees in 3 months last year from Syria alone [theguardian.com]. How many refugees did the USA Fly into the country at government expense last year?

There are private refugee sponsorships too, anyone can be sponsored using those, but mostly families are sponsored. It used to be there could be as many private sponsorships as you wanted, but the demand was so high they had to limit the number due to a paperwork backlog. Note that to sponsor a 3 person family costs $23000 (in the bank before the application could be submitted), and the applications were so popular, they had to limit them!

Canadians will privately sponsor more than 16000 people in 2017, more private sponsorships than ever before.

That said, this article doesn't apply to those people at all. These are unsponsored refugees, who made their way to the USA on their own, and are now moving to Canada because they are worried their Asylum application in the USA will be denied. There is no limit I am aware of on how many refugees Canada will admit that way.

You need to educate yourself some more, and stop cherry picking the articles that suit your agenda.

Each non-legal immigrant (like Somalians) into Canada will cost the tax payers approximately 1 million US dollars over a lifetime. Thus $23 000 will not cover the cost at all. And all this to be repeated for every child that they make as residents.

      It's a numbers reality.
