A payment card featuring a fingerprint sensor has been unveiled by credit card provider Mastercard. The rollout follows two successful trials in South Africa.

The technology works in the same way as it does with mobile phone payments: users must have their finger over the sensor when making a purchase. Security experts have said that while using fingerprints is not foolproof, it is a "sensible" use of biometric technology.

The cards are thought to be the first to include both the digital template of the user's fingerprint and the sensor required to read their fingerprints at the point of sale. Previous biometric payment cards only worked when used in conjunction with a separate fingerprint scanner. That limited their usefulness, as only stores with the correct equipment could accept them.

I would use a rhythm and pressure-based system for unlocking the card, much cheaper and easier to implement.

The way it would work is that you squeeze the sensor area between thumb and forefinger in a rhythmic pattern, that way, you can use the catchy hook from that old song, or "Shave and a haircut, two bits" or something like that. With a precise enough pressure sensor and the nature of the password system it would be easy to use in public without being compromised.

And before somebody gives me shit about it not working for deaf people, sure it will -- allow download of a free desktop/phone app to provide a visual aid and an option to randomly generate visual patterns to aid in "password" learning. The app and software would provide a legal pledge not to retain any generated passwords unless the user deliberately wants to back them up.

That's my idea, don't you fucking steal it.
