From Motherboard (Vice.com),

Documents obtained by Motherboard: "No reuse. No parts harvesting. No resale."

Apple released its Environmental Responsibility Report Wednesday, an annual grandstanding effort that the company uses to position itself as a progressive, environmentally friendly company. Behind the scenes, though, the company undermines attempts to prolong the lifespan of its products.

Apple's new moonshot plan is to make iPhones and computers entirely out of recycled materials by putting pressure on the recycling industry to innovate. But documents obtained by Motherboard using Freedom of Information requests show that Apple's current practices prevent recyclers from doing the most environmentally friendly thing they could do: Salvage phones and computers from the scrap heap.

Tree Hugging is incompatible with using Apple equipment?

Naa, they are perfectly compatible, both are about feel good, not actually improving the world.

This is an economic story, not a save the planet story.

    Ignorance is bliss eh?

Let's see, what are some common things "tree huggers" do that the average person does not?

    - Compost organic waste
    - Recycle
    - Use public transit / bicycles for transportation
    - Bring their reusable bags to the grocery store
    - Eat less / no meat

Yup, not making any difference... don't worry, you can still eat your steaks and drive your SUV or whatever it is you don't like being criticized for. Its a free country, everyone is free to be a total douche bag like you.

compost: Sure, because I don't live in a liberal sort of place. My half-acre lot in unincorporated county land means I can just pile stuff outside.

recycle: Sure, because I wouldn't have room in the trash otherwise. I have 11 kids. There are three huge trash bins, 128 gallon I think, picked up twice a week. I still need to recycle.

transit: You've got to be kidding. Two-hour trips (to go just a few miles) sitting next to smelly criminals is not acceptable. It's also expensive; they charge per person.

bicycle: Eh, no. Destinations have no place to keep it safe. Florida summers are limiting: thunderstorms, heat, humidity

      bags: Sometimes my wife bothers.

meat: Sorry, I'm not an herbivore. If I had a gorilla-size brain, and a gorilla-size intestine, I might be a vegan.

SUV: I got the smallest car that would fit my family. It's a 15-passenger van, titled/registered as a bus. I probably get 104 to 156 passenger*miles/gallon from it. That is probably 3x better than a supposedly "efficient" hybrid with 1 tree-hugger (childless liberal) occupant.
