The Liberal premier of Ontario announced details of the Ontario Basic Income Pilot. The provincial government issued a press release saying

Three regions will take part in the study. Pilots will start in late spring in Hamilton, including Brantford and Brant County; and in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area. The third pilot will start by this fall [autumn] in Lindsay.

The Basic Income model Ontario has developed will ensure that eligible participants receive:

Up to $16,989 per year for a single person, less 50 per cent of any earned income
Up to $24,027 per year for a couple, less 50 per cent of any earned income
Up to an additional $6,000 per year for a person with a disability.

[...] The three test regions will host 4,000 participants eligible to receive a basic income payment, between the ages of 18 to 64. By late spring, people in these areas will begin receiving information about the pilot and how to participate. The province is partnering with these communities and other experts to make sure that the Ontario Basic Income Pilot is fair, effective, and scientifically valid.

I have explained why this is stupid enough times already so I'll just leave this:

    Nobody reads Kipling [kiplingsociety.co.uk] anymore....

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

On first reading, I get the impression that is written in code.

Much like "revelations" in what I assume to be one of the "copybook headings."

Copybooks were used by schoolchildren to learn to write. A short saying would be on the top of the page and the child would copy it over and over as writing practice. Not ones to miss the opportunity to instill values back in the day, the people who produced the books with the copybooks made sure the headings were usually themselves instructive, as implied in the poem. If you don't work you will die. That sort of thing. Things children should know, but no longer do because we no longer teach it to them.

Reminds me of a typing program my high-school had available. I think it was even a free download back in the day.

My understanding of UBI is that you do have to let people pay for their sins. If they want to spend the money on booze, drugs, hookers and freeze to death under a bridge you have to let them. From what I have read for it to be effective you need to basically have single payer healthcare, then you cut all other benefits to 0. At this point you can then get rid of the minimum wage as people now have an option to not work and yet still scrape by. The goal of UBI isn't to live well but provide enough that one could feed, clothe, and shelter themselves to survive if they want to. This may mean (on the extreme low end) eating vitamin enriched ramen noodles while living in a poured concrete apartment similar in size to a college dorm and wearing tee-shirts and jeans.
