An ICE hotline set up to allow reports of crimes committed by "criminal aliens" has had a close encounter with trolls:

The administration set up the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office on Wednesday, in accordance with President Trump's executive order in January. The office, folded within the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, aims to "assist victims of crimes committed by criminal aliens," according to the Department of Homeland Security.

"Alien" is a term used by the federal government to describe individuals who are not American citizens but who reside on U.S. soil. [...] Despite the line's intended purpose, callers have been reporting a range of abnormal activity.

1-855-48-VOICE to report all your encounters w/ illegal martians, rude Sasquatch, unleashed Texas Blue Hounds, Springheel Jack. Goblin army.

ICE denounced the calls, saying such actions hurt victims of real crimes. Callers have even mentioned spotting "muggle-borns," a term from the "Harry Potter" book series referring to magical characters with non-magical parents.

You can have open borders or a welfare state. Choose one.

Personally I think we should have neither as a policy decision but math excludes implementing both at the same time.

Well, we are long ways away from a welfare state.
Well, welfare for the poor. We are replete with welfare for the rich - home mortgage deduction, tax-free health insurance, roth IRAs, college IRAs, health savings accounts, small business loans.

    So open borders it is.

Well, we are long ways away from a welfare state.

      "Free" stuff:

Government schools, military, police, firefighters, roads, SNAP/food stamps/WIC, federal disability payments, cash payments via EITCs, subsidized living expenses ala Section 8, Robamacare [politico.com], various and sundry handout programs ala Obamaphones, weather reports, prisons, and more I'm overlooking.

In 2015, the US federal budget was 3.8 trillion dollars [nationalpriorities.org]. One way or the other, those funds are spent on welfare, with ~2.45 trillion mainly benefitting "poor" people.

The USA is absolutely a welfare state, a fatal flaw all on its own. Continuing the practice of open borders for a gravely-injured welfare nation will be fatal.

So you made a list of things that we dribble out to as few people as possible for as short a period of time as possible.
The existence of some welfare does not make the USA a welfare state.

You're just applying 19th century thinking. We don't need the slave trade anymore (which is what borders are all about. Nations are prisons). And we certainly don't need to allow bureaucrats so much power.
