News Corp's news.com.au reports on an internal document leaked from Facebook:

The confidential document dated this year detailed how by monitoring posts, comments and interactions on the site, Facebook can figure out when people as young as 14 feel "defeated", "overwhelmed", "stressed", "anxious", "nervous", "stupid", "silly", "useless", and a "failure".

Such information gathered through a system dubbed sentiment analysis could be used by advertisers to target young Facebook users when they are potentially more vulnerable.

Facebook has apologised and says it will investigate.

The story originally appeared in News Corp's The Australian, where it is pay-walled.

    Facebook Apology

Facebook sincerely regrets the disclosure of information suggesting that Facebook and its advertisers would target vulnerable teenage minors at their most vulnerable times.

Facebook pledges that in the future it will take sufficient care to ensure that such internal information and plans will not again be disclosed to the public prior to or after plan implementation.

Facebook is deeply sorry that through bad judgement and poor choice of actions any of its employees, officers, investors, partners or advertisers may have been embarrassed by the disclosure of this information.

Facebook promises to invesigate and find those responsible for the disclosure of this information. Those who would assist Facebook in committing these horrible actions should not be subject to public ridicule due to leaks of proprietary information.

Facebook takes full responsibility for its negligence and lack of diligent care to ensure that it would not get caught in its plans to take advantage of vulnerable teens. You have our personal assurance that Facebook will be more careful in the future.

To all of those who were hurt by Facebook's inappropriate, selfish and thoughtless plans against vulnerable teens, Facebook would like to humbly offer its sincerest indifference.
