Apple CEO Tim Cook said that his company will start a $1 billion fund to promote advanced manufacturing jobs in the United States.
"We're announcing it today. So you're the first person I'm telling," Cook told "Mad Money" host Jim Cramer on Wednesday. "Well, not the first person because we've talked to a company that we're going to invest in already," he said, adding that Apple will announce the first investment later in May.
[...] As advanced manufacturing jobs are in high demand in the U.S., the sector was already high on Apple's list of priorities, and Cook hopes the investment will spur even more job creation.

Wooohooo... can you imagine how many man*years can one hire to flip burgers in fly-over country for $1B?
What... manufacturing? High tech? But... city slickers again?
What about Wyoming and West Virginia? Who should they vote for to get some jobs?

Flipping the burgers is probably considered food service, rather than manufacturing.
Making the patties and buns probably counts as manufacturing.

I don't think so - but you've made me curious. What ARE bakery personnel classified as? Hmmmm - https://www.bls.gov/soc/ [bls.gov] leads me to this page https://www.bls.gov/soc/2010/soc_alph.htm [bls.gov] then ctrl-F for baker, which leads to minor group, food processing workers, and major group production occupations. Food service workers generally come out on the short end of the stick, with low paying jobs. But, SOME chefs, exceptional bakers, and even cooks make exceptional money - hell, even wait staff can make a killing if they are good enough to get the best jobs. Most bakery personnel are probably minimum wage, I suppose, with the typical pyramid, people on top make decent money. I'm sure the typical Wonder Bread employee can't compare his pay to a pastry chef at a 4 star restaurant. The question would be, union shop, or not?

I did not mean to imply those jobs were high-paying.
I was surprised to learn I was doing "manufacturing" (industrial food preparation) while trying to fill out a salary survey (I was not working in the field I studied).

My sentence could have been structured better, I suppose. I hope you got the context, that "some" cooks make exceptional money. As in any profession, some combination of skill, talent, luck, connections, and being at the right place at the right time can make a cook moderately wealthy. But MOST cooks work for sucky wages, only little better than the wait staff, whose wages really suck.
