Hackers have obtained a copy of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and are threatening to release portions of it unless Disney pays a Bitcoin ransom:

Although Iger did not mention the movie by name during the meeting, Deadline reports that it's a copy of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.'

[...] The "ransom" demand from the hacker is reminiscent of another prominent entertainment industry leak, where the requested amount of Bitcoin was not paid. Just a few weeks ago a group calling itself TheDarkOverlord (TDO) published the premiere episode of the fifth season of Netflix's Orange is The New Black, followed by nine more episodes a few hours later.

[...] There is no indication that the previous and threatened leaks are related in any way. TorrentFreak has seen a list of movies and TV-shows TDO said they have in their possession, but the upcoming 'Pirates' movie isn't among them.

Disney has refused to pay a ransom and is cooperating with the FBI.

    God, ^^^THIS^^^

I have every single thing Disney has ever done up to about 5 years ago pirated and on a hard drive in my room. For that reason.

The cocksuckers never release anything again because they are so fucking greedy. Or worse, they re-edit the shit out of it and tried "funking it up for 90s". Thankfully, I have the original shorts with Donald Duck, Mickey, Goofy and the gang. Along with all the great old movies. All of them. I can enjoy bed knobs and broomsticks, or Irish leprechauns anytime I want. That and Herbie. Which kids might find strange today with self driving cars and AI almost here.

Seriously. Fuck them. I was able to enjoy it immensely as a child, but they denied it to entire generations because of greed. The parents would've loved to have shared it with their children, but Disney "locked it up in the vault". I did my best to free up everything in the vault for my family at least. I've sent entire copies to other families, and don't feel bad in the least, because they already had all the VHS tapes and they were going bad. Disney refused to offer replacements on the market, so fuck them.

Your family will be one of very few who even remember a thing about Disney's former greatness.

They will have fond memories of family gatherings and Disney. Most other kids will miss this. Their memories will center around something else.

For the next generation, those works will simply erode into oblivion. The same thing our fellow soylenter McGrew warns about.

No-one will give a damn, because their childhood did not include it.

Both you guys are exactly right. I've written to Disney a couple times thanking them for locking up all their content, keeping it off Netflix, etc., because as a consequence my kids don't know who Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse are, and don't bother me to buy them Disney merchandise or take them to Disneyland. They have probably saved me $50K of not buying Disney shit over their lifetimes. Disney, which pushed and pushed for copyright to last the life of the creator plus infinity years, won't even be remembered in 20.

I am reasonably confident on that one, because my wife won the grand prize at a raffle for the neighborhood theater last week: a family day pass for any of Disney's Florida theme parks. My kids? No reaction. At all. We asked them where they wanted to go this summer, thinking they'd be excited about the option to go to Disneyland, and they said, "Uncle's Water Park," by which they meant my younger brother's neighborhood water park in Ypsilanti. So, Ypsilanti neighborhood water park > Disneyland.

Further, some element of the Disney operation must be waking up to the declining interest in Disney properties, because they're offering crazy family packages to Disneyworld. My sister took her kids there and all they wanted to do was go to Universal World, because they had no interest in Disneyworld. And a couple weeks ago at the movie theaters the ads they ran for an hour plus before the movie were predominantly about Disney adventure travel package trips to see smiling, culturally appropriately dressed people next to Machu Picchu, next to Mt. Fuji, etc. Despite that, though, the knowledge has obviously not percolated up to the executive suite at Disney, Corp.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE the soccer scene in Bedknobs. Inspired me to play more soccer as a child.

Equally, I also wanted to dress in medieval armor and challenge gun-toting invaders... convinced their bullets would end up ricocheting down to my steel boot.
