A father and son team inspired by the Transformers film series have turned their Russian-made Lada into a shape-shifting robot with fully-functioning automatic weapons.

Gennadiy Kocherga and his son Sergey, spent almost six months turning their VAZ-2110 Lada into their own version of a character from the popular movie franchise. And their efforts went on full display at the Oryol stunt show in Russia this week.

The Youtube video is interesting, if for nothing other than the lack of special effects.

That's the comment I was looking for. I'm not Russian, and I've never even seen a Lada. But, I've often read disparaging comments about one of those Russian cars - and I thought it was a Lada.

Here in the US, Ford is probably comparable to Lada. The word is actually an acronym for Found On Road Dead, or Fix Or Repair Daily. Other possible acronyms posted here: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ford [urbandictionary.com]

Fords aren't that bad. They're really the best of the big-3 US automakers if you care about quality. Chryslers are the worst ones, and GMs are in the middle. Stay away from the Fords (usually Focuses) with DSG transmissions though; those seem to have a lot of problems.

SHHHH! Stop being reasonable! I'm trying to find out how many motorheads come to Soylent. If I can get a feud going between GM, Ford, and Mopar fanbois, we'll be able to get a count. There are some good acronyms for some of the other autos out there, too. I'd tell you what Pontiac stands for, but the progressives would be swarming my ass, thinking that I made it up all by myself. ;^)

Oh, fuck you. Tell us what Pontiac stands for :)

It's not like you're afraid of the Progs around here. I grew up in a repair shop, so I've heard plenty of motorheads going off about how much Ford sucks. A lot :)

I'm not a Ford owner so I can't speak from personal experience, just what I read. I'm also not addressing older models, just the ones from this decade: all the American cars have improved a lot since the 70s and 80s, which were really awful. But also remember, when I say they're not "that bad", I'm comparing to the other two big-3 American companies, not to all automakers worldwide. From everything I've read, Ford currently makes the very best cars compared to GM and Chrysler, and Chrysler is the very worst.

Also, again from what I've read, modern Fords are actually pretty reliable, except for those DSGs I noted (and aren't those made by a German company?), and the other big complaint with them has been the MyFordTouch systems, though after they ditched Microsoft (WTF were they thinking?) that seemed to not be as bad.

But yeah, I wouldn't buy one myself. Why bother, when I can get a Japanese car that's so much better?

And I do have to ask: if you don't like your Ford, and you don't like your GM either, why'd you buy them? I can understand making one mistake in judgment; we all do that. But two? Wasn't the first one enough to convince you to try something foreign? Sorry if it sounds like I'm tooting my own horn here, but my personal experience is that I grew up with American cars in my family, mostly GMs, and they were all crap. Of course, this was the 80s, so American cars were especially bad back then, but it really soured me on American cars. When I went to college I bought a Honda and it was wonderful; well engineered, supremely reliable, and easy to work on too. Got another for my wife back when I was married. But I kept an eye on American cars over the years, and had to drive a bunch, either family cars (like the Mercury Grand Marquis just before they canceled it--what a POS), or a bunch of rental cars (which honestly weren't too bad, they really have improved I'll admit, but nothing to get excited about either--boring lackluster designs, poor control placement, mediocre driving characteristics), and a couple years ago I wanted another brand-new car and this time did my research and got a Mazda, and again it's wonderful: well-engineered, extremely reliable (so far), and even easier to work on than my Hondas (granted, I've only done oil changes so far, but I've never seen it this easy, unlike some other cars). I honestly can't fathom why anyone would buy an American car brand-new, except for a couple of exceptions: 1) the Chevy Volt, it's pretty unique and there really aren't any comparable cars except for some much-more-expensive BMW, or 2) you want a full-size pickup for some reason; it really seems like that's what the American makes really concentrate on, leaving their cars as afterthoughts.

          Budget.

The ford because it was the only (model runout) new car we could afford when we needed a new car for reliability (it's been fairly reliable and the best handling FWD car I've driven, but it's badly hamstrung by clutch/gearbox combination and the steering's pretty poor). Anything Japanese was unaffordable by comparison.

The gm car is a commodore, and again bought for budget reasons - the only affordable RWD family car on the market (the cheapest alternative was and still is BMW). Brilliant handling, adequate performance, poor steering and a triumph of marketing over engineering; the ford equivalent misses out on economy and passenger room/road footprint ratio.

And, strictly speaking, they're both foreign cars in Oz (although fanbois will disagree).

What's the difference between a Lada and a golfball?

You can drive a golfball 300 meters.
