from the Bond.-James-Bond. dept.

Not much to say, other than Moore was the first Bond I came to know, and as such, is the first face I think of when I think of the Bond Character.

In remembrance, what was your favourite role that Moore played over the years, Bond or otherwise?

I remember when I was a teen boy watching James Bond movies on TV, of course they were new back then, not all retro like now, and thinking that becoming a CIA agent would be a pretty good time, I mean James Bond movies look exciting so why not?

Then I found out what the CIA actually does, and yeah not so interested anymore.

Remarkably little on TV is accurate. Its surprising just how much is wrong or fake across the board. I'm not talking about exciting conspiracy theories, although those do exist, but even the most boring workplace issues.

Another Bond / Moore memory is you can obtain and watch all the bond movies going back decades much like Trek and its interesting to watch special effects over the decades. In the earliest movies they were technically substandard compared to today but very believably and fit the plot. As time goes on they got more ridiculous until there's no point watching anymore, although the technical quality continually improved.

My favorite Moore Bond film was "Live and Let Die". As wikipedia states "Live and Let Die was released during the height of the blaxploitation era" Given that I was a teen right before the "white hip hop" cultural appropriation of the 90s I thought that rather unfair, a movie "blackface" is for no apparent reason unacceptable, but a music "blackface" is celebrated, which I felt was pretty much BS. Aside from the blaxploitation stuff which is probably less than 1% of the screen time, its a hell of a good story presented well. If edited to fix the political problems and re-released it would probably do well.

I'd propose "Moonraker" as the worst Moore Bond film of all time. That was the stereotype of "everyone in Hollywood was smoking weed in the 70s so really dumb ideas got produced". See also mid 70s to early 80s TV which is only bearable to watch if you're also high as a kite. Anyway Moonraker is relevant to SN, kinda sorta, because I like to use it as an example for those "moon landings were faked and recorded on a sound stage". That movie was just awful. As per above everyone in Hollywood smoking weed and they're like "yeah I heard kids these days like star wars why can't we have a james bond in space movie" Yeah well this sucky movie is why. Even if they put down the crack pipe and took it seriously I still don't think it would work out. There's this special effect with a boat and a hovercraft that is just WTF.

I admit to Moonraker being one of my guilty pleasures, mainly because I'm such a geek about space stuff. Full of ridiculous stuff, but I will still be entertained by it. Jaws is also one of my favorite villains too.

    RIP

Just imagine working for that agency and having a work related conflict with your boss. Not easy to protest, leave or go public etc.. Can't even talk about it. Doesn't seem like a good choice regarding working conditions.

Btw, I found Moonraker re-entry [youtube.com] kind of entertaining ;-)

    Murders people. ...e.g., JFK.
Attempts (and often succeeds at) regime change--and, in the process, murders people.

This is in contrast to the original charter for that outfit which said that they were to aggregate and analyze intel from other agencies. FULL STOP.

Harry Truman said that the greatest regret of his life was chartering CIA.

[it's] interesting to watch special effects

I liked the car that jumped the river and did a roll in the process. [google.com]

Yup on the big scale. On the small scale its almost worse, very few in the CIA do the "James Bond" stuff its mostly sitting in cubicles trying to figure impossible stuff out. So not wanting to sit in a cube all day and ponder, I got a job in IT where I ... sit in a cubicle and ponder impossible tasks. Eh whatever.
