Bloomberg reports:

Donald Trump next week will send Congress a proposal to hand over control of the U.S. air-traffic control system to a non-profit corporation, part of a week-long push for his infrastructure plan, said Gary Cohn, the president's chief economic adviser.

The proposal, which Trump will release on Monday in an Oval Office ceremony and Rose Garden event, will kick off what Cohn, director of the National Economic Council, called the formal launch of the president's infrastructure initiative. Later in the week, Trump plans to travel to Ohio and Kentucky to garner support for his plan -- a key campaign promise -- to channel $1 trillion into the nation's roads, bridges, inland waterways and other public facilities.

Why transfer it to a non-profit organization?

I don't care about the controllers because as long as the TSA stands between me and reasonably unimpeded air travel I won't be getting on any aircraft.

I understand some people have to and I'm honestly sorry for them.

I like to drive anyway and these days crossing the US border seems like a very poor idea indeed so driving gets the job done just fine. So far. Not that I expect that to last much longer either.

Anyone's going to be looking at my private parts they're buying me dinner and providing sexy conversation at the very least. And it won't be another dude. Ever. :)

Of course, if the TSA decides to only hire hot ladies who will sweep me into a room and have me walking out smiling... well then we can talk about it. Otherwise, the TSA can go fuck itself. Cuz it ain't gonna be fucking me.

    speculation -
Transferring to a non-profit might serve the same general purpose as the "Authorities" in New York State. For example the "New York Thruway Authority" might as well be part of the state Dept. of Transportation...except that it has its own separate budget and the funding doesn't appear in the state budget. It is basically an accounting smoke screen, makes it harder to follow the money. But don't worry, the money is still being funneled to the right good ol'boys from the country club^H^H^H^H^H^H^H political appointees...

Is this move on air traffic control the same idea, get things out of the Federal budget so it looks like money is being "saved"? Trump is an expert at smoke screens to divert attention and hide what he is really doing.

Because an organisation whose purpose is transport safety should not be trying to maximize profits?
Because non-profits have more strict requirements for reporting and transparency?
Because a non-profit is required to have an explicit statement of purpose, and legally required to follow it?

That should become the motto of air traffic control and crash investigators. It already is for mass-shooting investigators. Yeah another bunch of kids got shot, stuff happens bro. Probably should get yourself some extra ammo.

The purpose of the media freaking out over copying Canada and a zillion other places by going semi private is to extend the anti-Trump message by distracting from the announced $1T in infrastructure spending.

So for the next couple weeks we'll hear nothing about infrastructure spending but lots of hot air about the employment options for ATC personnel.
