Bloomberg reports:

Donald Trump next week will send Congress a proposal to hand over control of the U.S. air-traffic control system to a non-profit corporation, part of a week-long push for his infrastructure plan, said Gary Cohn, the president's chief economic adviser.

The proposal, which Trump will release on Monday in an Oval Office ceremony and Rose Garden event, will kick off what Cohn, director of the National Economic Council, called the formal launch of the president's infrastructure initiative. Later in the week, Trump plans to travel to Ohio and Kentucky to garner support for his plan -- a key campaign promise -- to channel $1 trillion into the nation's roads, bridges, inland waterways and other public facilities.

Anyone know if this will be better for the people doing ATC?

IIRC they wanted to go on strike quite a while back, but we're not allowed to because of the essential nature of the job.

Don't forget the Saintly Reagan the Senile wanted to break the air traffic controllers union. Mustn't give the plebs a chance at fair collective bargaining.

He did break them. Considering they basically ended up grounding all airline flights I can see why he stepped in. But maybe thousands of people stranded and millions of tons of cargo can just wait huh until they get their extra 25 cents an hour?

And thus ends the lesson in the power of collective bargaining. Congratulations, grasshopper.

Worse for people doing ATC. They were getting a fedgov retirement and bennies package now they'll get contractor treatment at best.

Like the difference between getting a military retirement for being a cook in the Army for 20 years, vs being a DFACS contract food service employee and getting, well, basically nothing for pay, bennies, or retirement.

Of course now that you're not in fedgov you don't have to sit thru 160 hours per year of mandatory diversity indoctrination or whatever. So there are minor theoretical improvements in quality of living that could happen, however unlikely.

Then again the relationship with the FAA will likely be more strained than currently because they'll be a competing private firm rather than fellow fedgov.

I suspect they'll be some quality of service issues much like USPS vs UPS/FEDEX.

Citation needed. I've had a lot more problems with UPS/FedEx (latest two in the last couple of weeks) than with the US Post Office. And the Post Office has handled many more items for me.
