The big SteamOS beta update that Valve shipped last month has now officially been released into the stable updates branch.
This is a very large update. It includes a new 4.11 Linux kernel, and updated drivers for AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA graphics hardware. This update also switches SteamOS from the proprietary AMDGPU-PRO driver to the open source mesa driver. Debian 8.8 and security updates are also included.

I run Linux. I run Nvidia cards. I use the Nvidia proprietary drivers. That is only because I think that I can trust Nvidia. I don't KNOW that Nvidia is trustworthy, I just think/hope they are.
We've had a number of exploits, over the years, based on proprietary drivers and proprietary firmware. The latest is the Intel Active Management exploit.
It's possible that if Intel had open sourced their Active Management, someone might have found the exploit, before the bad guys found it. It's also possible that if it were open source, all those extra eyes would have missed the exploit, as well. But, with closed source, NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT VULNERABILITIES UNTIL IT IS TO LATE!!
That doesn't even touch on the hardware sold with exploits coded in. Nor does it even begin to consider the NSA desire to code more exploits into everything. For all I know, I've been pwned for years, because I run Nvidia hardware. It's possible that every card sold for the past decade provides a backdoor into the computer it is installed on.
Obviously, I don't believe that to be so - but it's possible.
