Adam West, the actor best known for playing Batman in the 1960s television series, has died aged 88 of leukaemia. He is remembered by fans for his kooky, exaggerated portrayal of the superhero in the ABC show, which ran for three seasons from 1966 to 1968.

West once said that he played Batman “for laughs, but in order to do [that], one had to never think it was funny. You just had to pull on that cowl and believe that no one would recognise you.”

In a statement, his family said: “Our dad always saw himself as the Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero.”

The 1960s Batman was a live-action comic book.
Realizing that something is camp, [google.com] and that camp sells, then going with it and making some bucks makes you insightful.

you are PREZACTLY right on that one, kamper, it was camp/comic book style done right...
they really carried over the frenetic, goofy, and PUNNY stuff the original early batman comic books had, and one of the few shows that was pitch-perfect in doing the translation to teevee...
mr west played the part exactly right, with equal parts comedic farce, faux seriousness, and rollicking super-heroism...
like you said: "ZONK! POW!", that never got old...
    .
all the later dark batman junk which took itself too seriously, just never was really the original batman to me...
    .
the other semi-cultish movie i can think of that was done EXTREMELY well as a 'comic book' styled movie, was fifth element; again, hit just the right notes of not taking itself too seriously, and just making a fun story to enjoy without any bullshit, over-earnest PC crap overlaid...
